Birds of Prey actress Mary Elizabeth Winstead isn't sure if she'll ever get to return as Huntress, but she would be open to the possibility. Winstead starred alongside Margot Robbie, Jurnee Smollett, Ella Jay Basco, and Rosie Perez in the DCEU's Birds of Prey, a colorful, R-rated effort that arrived in theaters before the pandemic. Though much of the Cathy Yan-directed movie was centered on Robbie's Harley Quinn, it also introduced the key members of the titular team from the comics. Birds of Prey was well-received by critics and audiences, but it struggled to make much of an impression at the box office.

As a result, there hasn't been much by way of a follow-up just yet. Harley recently appeared in James Gunn's The Suicide Squadthough that had nothing to do with Birds of Prey. Winstead and Smollett both received raves for their performances as Huntress and Black Canary, respectively, but only one of them is on the way to receiving a spin-off project. Just a few days ago, news broke that a Black Canary movie is in the works at HBO Max, with Smollett set to return.

Meanwhile, there haven't been any updates for Winstead's Huntress. While talking to ComicBook.com, Winstead opened up about any potential spin-offs or sequels for her DCEU character. She admitted that she doesn't know if there is a future for Huntress, but should anything come about, she would happily return. Winstead said:

"I'm down for anything, really. I think Huntress is such a fun character, I don't know if there's any plans in the future to continue that version of Huntress, because there's a few different versions out there, in the comic books there's different versions, so I don't know if that's what's in store. But I'm happy I got the chance to do at least one iteration of her and if that iteration continues then I'd love to be a part of it, but we'll see what happens."

As the socially awkward vigilante, Winstead made quite an impression on fans. It would be really exciting to see her return in a new project, perhaps one that would pick up with Huntress after the events of Birds of Prey. The Black Canary movie would also be a good place for her, since she already has a relationship with Smollett's Dinah Lance. That project is still in the very early stages of development, so Winstead not having heard anything about a role for Huntress just yet doesn't mean anything. If the Black Canary movie uses the Birds of Prey continuity, it would make sense to include Huntress as well. Perhaps Renee Montoya could appear too.

For now, this is all speculation. The DCEU is constantly changing, and it's hard to predict what projects will actually make it to production. It's rather disappointing that Birds of Prey doesn't seem poised to receive a proper sequel, but it's at least nice to know Black Canary is on the verge of returning. If Winstead can secure a comeback for Huntress as well, then it will be almost as good as getting a Birds of Prey 2.
