Director James Gunn has read the movie script for the upcoming DC Extended Universe movie, Birds of Prey (And The Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn). Gunn is no stranger to the connecting storylines of superhero movies. After receiving critical and box office acclaim for Guardians of the Galaxy, Gunn has been a major influence on the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Gunn has gone on to executive produce Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. Not long after the release of the third Avengers movie, Gunn was fired by Disney from directing Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 due to some inappropriate comments on his Twitter account years prior. While Gunn eventually was brought back to the MCU, he was hired on with DC in between to direct The Suicide Squad.

With the success of Wonder WomanAquamanShazam, and Joker, the DCEU has shifted away from entirely connected storylines in favor of standalone movies. Gunn's The Suicide Squad will mark the first time in five years where DC will have two films following each other with the involvement of Harley Quinn. Before The Suicide Squad releases in 2021, Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn will appear in the upcoming Birds of Prey movie early next year. Seeing how Gunn has no involvement with Birds of Prey, he will need to be informed about the events of the movie in order to build on Harley Quinn's character in his film. Thankfully, he's confirmed as much.

While answering some fan questions on his Instagram story, Gunn briefly mentioned his exposure to Birds of Prey, along with his thoughts on casting his next movie, The Suicide SquadBetween the questions about him as a filmmaker and his favorite movies, some answers came out giving some insight into his level of involvement with DC's upcoming movies. When asked if he has read the Birds of Prey script, Gunn answered yes. Whether he enjoyed the script or gave any notes on it is undetermined.

Fans have been reassured about their concern over Gunn's Suicide Squad ignoring Birds of Prey thanks to his answer on Instagram. Since he is using the Harley Quinn character in his next movie, it is good to know that Gunn is writing his Suicide Squad sequel with the knowledge of the events of Birds of Prey in mind. Gunn also answered a question about his time working with Margot Robbie, to which he said she is the best actor he has ever worked with.

Gunn reading the script for Birds of Prey is interesting to learn since it gives some insight into the direction DC is going with their upcoming movies. At least, with DC's films that include Harley Quinn - both Birds of Prey and The Suicide Squad - the DCEU will remain connected. After a repeating string of standalone movies having little to do with each other, it's clear that DC is not afraid to go back into interconnected stories again with Birds of Prey and The Suicide Squad.
