Director Cathy Yan wants to explore the relationship between Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy in Birds of Prey 2. Far from being strangers to one another, Harley and Ivy have been teaming up since the former was introduced on Batman: The Animated Series in the 1990s. In spite of their contradictory natures, the pair developed a strong friendship after their first adventure together and continued to join forces in other DC TV shows and comic books during the years that followed. Finally, in 2015, Harley Quinn comic book writers Amanda Connor and Jimmy Palmiotti officially made them a romantic couple.

Although Poison Ivy has yet to make her debut in the DCEU, it may be only a matter of time before that changes. Margot Robbie, who plays Harley in the DCEU, spent years pushing to get a Gotham City Sirens movie off the ground after joining the franchise in Suicide Squad, with the intent of having Harley, Catwoman, and Ivy team up to fight bad guys in Gotham. She went on to follow that film with Birds of Prey instead, but has since voiced a desire to see a Harley-Ivy adventure on the big screen one day. She's not the only DCEU veteran to say that, either, with her Birds of Prey helmsman now echoing the call.

Speaking to The Wrap about a potential Birds of Prey 2, Yan said "I would love to see Poison Ivy and I would certainly love to see the relationship between Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy.” She's not ruling a sequel out after the first movie's disappointing box office run either, and went on to tell the outlet “I think people aren’t ready to let go of Harley Quinn quite yet and you know, Margot I don’t think is ready to let go of Harley Quinn yet either."

Harley and Ivy in DC Universe Harley Quinn Season 1

Despite falling short of expectations at the box office, Birds of Prey wasn't a flat-out bomb and has continued to bring in returns thanks to its early on-demand release. Robbie is already set to return as Harley in James Gunn's The Suicide Squad next year, but there's reason to think Warner Bros. won't give up on making Harley Quinn spinoffs after that. The studio seems to have recognized its mismanaged Birds of Prey' marketing and has itself to blame for not taking full advantage of Robbie's bankability as the Harley Quinn character. Either Birds of Prey 2 or a spinoff prominently featuring both "Harley Quinn" and "Poison Ivy" in the title would have a good shot at being more successful, especially as the first movie's fanbase continues to grown on the home market. It's not a sure thing but, as Yan pointed out, there's clearly a demand for more Harley in the DCEU, all the more so when she's paired with other Gotham antiheroes and/or villains.

In the meantime, fans can look forward to Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy having a romance in the upcoming second season of DC Universe's Harley Quinn animated series. Some people have even started throwing out their suggestions for who should play Ivy in the DCEU, with popular choices including Knives Out star Ana de Armas and GLOW's Betty Gilpin (though they're far from the only names being tossed around). And again, whether Birds of Prey 2 ever happens or not, there's reason to think Harley and Ivy have a real shot at a future together on the big screen.
