BioWare just posted an interesting message on social media this morning, one that could be hinting at a remaster of the popular Mass Effect trilogy. This post features the original game in the hit sci-fi RPG franchise and has the fanbase buzzing with gossip as to what it could mean for the dormant series going forward.
First released in 2007, Mass Effect introduced players to Commander Shepard, a customizable N7 officer tasked with protecting the Milky Way Galaxy from the impending threat of the Reapers, giant squid-like mechs that sought to purge all life in the universe. Throughout the course of three games, Shepard would assemble a rag-tag crew of various allies, face off against all manner of space criminals and robotic legions, make difficult decisions that altered the course of the mission, and rally the different alien races of the galaxy in order to combat the growing Reaper menace. They could even find time for romance if the player picked the right dialog options.
The post on BioWare’s Twitter page contains a video clip of the opening narration text from the first Mass Effect game, detailing the backstory of how humanity first gained the ability to travel across the Milky Way by discovering highly advanced technology on Mars in the year 2148. The original Mass Effect trilogy won the hearts of players with its rich futuristic lore, memorable characters and meaningful narrative choices that carried over from one installment to the next. While the ending of 2012’s Mass Effect 3 proved to be divisive among fans, and 2017’s middling Mass Effect Andromedia failed to win them back, the series is still regarded as one of the best RPGs of all time.
Thus, a remaster for either current or next-gen consoles has been highly requested by fans, and rumors of such an update have been circulating for years. With BioWare’s multiplayer RPG Anthem having been met with poor reception last year due to a myriad number of technical issues and overall lack of energy, the company might be looking to regain the goodwill of customers after years of mistrust by unveiling a remaster of one of their most popular titles. No real evidence has been given to support an upcoming rerelease past the vague tweet, but it remains an enticing clue for fans of the Mass Effect series, one of gaming’s most gripping and endearing science-fiction sagas.
