Highly anticipated post-apocalyptic open-world RPG Biomutant has a new gameplay trailer showcasing its vibrant world. Biomutant’s path to release has been a long one. Originally announced in 2017, the game has been on gamers’ radars with the promise of a unique, kung-fu movie-inspired mutant adventure. However, developer Experiment101 has trickled out information and footage over the past four years. Many believed development had stopped for the game at one point, but the studio assured them that Biomutant was still in development back in 2020, and it's set to finally arrive in May.

According to the developer, the project's sheer size has been a major factor in why the game has taken so long. Previous trailers have shown the possibilities of what players can do in Biomutant. So far, combat, character creation, and some of the enemy types found in the game have been shown. Extensive demos of real-time gameplay have also been showcased, each demonstrating incremental improvements over previous builds of the game. The most recent trailer was for Biomutant's combat, including various weapons, mutant abilities, and classes.

The newest trailer by publisher THQ Nordic channel looks at the verdant, post-apocalypse environments that players will be traversing as their furry mutant avatars. Vibrant and colorful meadows, frigid wintry vistas, and serene riverside villages are on full display in the trailer, and the game's art style appears to make up for its last-gen limitations. Buildings from the past are reworked or built off of by its NPC denizens shown going through their daily lives. Traversal options, like a walking robot, airships, horses, Breath of the Wild-style gliders, and what appears to be a functioning hand-car, will be available for players to further explore the world of Biomutant.

Going off the trailer, Biomutant seems to be taking a different approach to the post-apocalyptic setting. Other games like Fallout or Metro use muted, grey and brown color palettes, whereas Biomutant is packed with bright colors and hues. It is hard to argue that it is one of the more inviting post-apocalyptic settings in the genre, and its apparently many options for traversal and exploration looks refreshing.

It seems like the game is one built on passion, and the developer has clearly poured tons into it based on the footage shown so far. However, prospective players would be wise to maintain a healthy amount of skepticism. Recent releases of other long-awaited AAA games, like the buggy Cyberpunk 2077, makes it clear that trailers and actual hands-on experience are not the same thing. Hopefully, Biomutant breaks that trend and is everything both fans and developers of the game want it to be.

Biomutant will be available on PS4, Xbox One, and PC on May 25, 2021.
