Orion Pictures has set an official Summer 2020 release date for Bill & Ted Face the Music, aka. Bill & Ted 3. It's been thirty years now since Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure hit theaters, in the process introducing Alex Winter and Keanu Reeves as the loveably dim-witted teenaged musicians turned time-travelers Bill and Ted. While a sequel titled Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey was released just two years later, it's taken several decades for a third installment to get off the ground, due to factors ranging from a lack of funding to its stars' busy schedules (especially Reeves).

However, during all that time, Winter and Reeves have never wavered in their fondness for the Bill & Ted movies, nor their desire to bring the characters back for a third go-round. The project finally got a green-light last year, with the actors returning and Dean Parisot (Galaxy Quest) directing from a script by original Bill & Ted screenwriters Chris Matheson and Ed Solomon. Now, with filming slated to get underway in New Orleans this summer, the film has gotten an official launch date to boot.

Orion has revealed that Bill & Ted Face the Music will reach theaters next year on August 21, 2020. Winter and Reeves themselves announced the news in a video, where the pair thank their fans for their longstanding support in making the threequel a reality. You can check the clip out, below.

According to the film's synopsis, Bill & Ted Face the Music will pick up with Bill and Ted as middled-aged men who have yet to fulfill their destiny: creating the song that will give rise to a utopia, hundreds of years into the future. Needless to say, the concept of the Wyld Stallyns as forty or fifty-something slackers is inherently funny on its own and part of the reason why fans have never given up on hoping that the movie would become a reality. The threequel's creatives have always affirmed their desire to do right by the Bill and Ted characters too, and spent (literally) years writing and refining the script on spec. So, hopefully, the final result will prove to be worth all the effort they've poured into making it happen.

As for Bill & Ted Face the Music's release date: it puts the film in a decent position to perform well at the box office. Mid to late August is traditionally less competitive than the rest of the summer movie season, which should give the sequel more room to breathe and thrive commercially. It's the only film slated to arrive that day right now; but, even when that changes, Bill & Ted shouldn't end up having to do battle with any major tentpole releases. And with Coming to America 2 being scheduled to arrive two weeks earlier, August 2020 will be an unexpectedly busy month for belated comedy sequels in general, it seems.
