Production on Bill & Ted Face The Music is finally underway. Starting with Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure in 1989, Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter kicked off a time-travelling comedy franchise that encompassed movies, television, comics and more and gained immense popularity in the late 80s and early 90s. The duo starred as two stereotypical wannabe rockstars who, despite appearing to be little more than lazy teenagers, would actually go on to save the world, leading mankind into a blissful utopia.
After sequel Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey in 1991, talk of a third movie was constant and finally, in 2010, Reeves confirmed that a third adventure for the Wyld Stallyns was in development. Since then, however, the project has been stuck in a cycle of constant rewrites, as the cast and creative team strove to concoct a story that they felt lived up to the previous two films. In 2017, Bill & Ted 3 finally began to take shape, as the title was confirmed and the majority of the main cast were announced as returning. It was also revealed that Bill and Ted's daughters, Billie and Thea would appear in the film. Ominously, things began to look somewhat shaky once again when production was pushed back from March to June.
In most excellent news, Alex Winter has now confirmed via his Twitter account that production on Bill & Ted Face The Music is finally underway. This is no mere pre-production meeting either, as the actor confirms his arrival on location to actually begin filming on Bill & Ted 3. Winter pauses briefly to touch upon the inherent madness involved in moviemaking before giving a shout out to Ed Solomon, who has co-written all three films in the series.
Just got to location to shoot @BillandTed3. Making movies is a miraculous gig, but it's also stressful & fairly nuts. Good to be here with @ed_solomon, our great director & producer, many folks I've known most of my life. We're family, and that makes this all the more special.— Alex Winter (@Winter) June 16, 2019
Bill & Ted 3 officially moving into its filming phase will come as a great relief to those who have been waiting almost three decades for Reeves and Winter to reprise these iconic roles. So often it appeared that the franchise would never get its fabled threequel, particularly when Reeves' Hollywood career took off in a huge way. But now that the cameras are rolling, there's no going back. It's also strange how Winter talks about the Bill & Ted gang being a "family" after so much time has passed between films, speaking volumes about the close relationship enjoyed by those involved and perhaps giving some insight as to the franchise's enduring popularity.
The long-awaited start of production on Bill & Ted Face The Music continues what has, by all accounts, been a fantastic year for Reeves. From John Wick 3 and Toy Story 4 on the big screen to Cyberpunk 2077 and his current status as the overlord of internet memes, Reeves will have a big presence in theaters over the coming years and for many, that can only be a good thing.
