Between the years of 1993 and 1998, children (and adults) across the country were educated and entertained by the coolest science teacher anyone could ask for - Bill Nye, the Science Guy. On his PBS series, Bill (Bill, Bill, Bill!) Nye would teach viewers all about the properties of matter, how weather works, what happens when a star dies and more - but never was it boring or tedious, Nye made science fun! In the years since, Nye has continued his work through speaking engagements, writing books, and making TV appearances, but always with the same mission - daring us that we can change the world.
Now the former Boeing consultant and current CEO of The Planetary Society is hoping to not only change the world but save it - with a talk show. Titled Bill Nye Saves The World, the series will launch on Netflix's streaming service in Spring 2017. And just like his old PBS series, the goal of Bill Nye Saves The World remains education and entertainment. "Each episode will tackle a topic from a scientific point of view," states Netflix's official synopsis, "dispelling myths, and refuting anti-scientific claims that may be espoused by politicians, religious leaders or titans of industry."
In a statement (via Netflix), Nye spoke of his aspirations for the series:
"Since the start of the ‘Science Guy’ show, I’ve been on a mission to change the world by getting people everywhere excited about the fundamental ideas in science. Today, I’m excited to be working with Netflix on a new show, where we’ll discuss the complex scientific issues facing us today, with episodes on vaccinations, genetically modified foods and climate change. With the right science and good writing, we’ll do our best to enlighten and entertain our audience. And, perhaps we’ll change the world a little."

Currently, Netflix has the first season of the original Bill Nye the Science Guy series available to stream, but securing Nye for a brand new series is sure to be a hit, tapping into the same 1990s nostalgia which gave way to their Full House revival, Fuller House. Netflix has also recently branched out into the talk show format with Chelsea, and it's expected that episodes of Bill Nye Saves The World will follow suit by hosting special guests. There will also likely be scientific experiments and demonstrations, as well as Nye's own brand of zany humor.
In addition to Nye, the creatives for Bill Nye Saves The World will include Michael Naidus (The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson) as showrunner and executive producer, Mike Drucker (The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon) as head comedy writer, and astronomer Phil Plait as the head science writer.
Bill Nye Saves The World premieres on Netflix in Spring 2017. We'll have more information as it develops.
