They say that opposites attract, but scientifically speaking, we’re much more likely to be attracted to someone who looks and acts the same as us. When it comes to picking a partner, you probably don’t have a specific height requirement in mind, but chances are you’ll end up with someone who doesn’t require you to literally squat down or stand on a footstool in order to kiss them.
The average height for men and women in most of the world is 5’10” and 5’4”, respectively — meaning that most couples will have somewhere around a six-inch height difference. But in the case of these 16 celebrity couples, it appears as though opposites really do attract.
For the most part, the only time that we get to see celebrity couples together are during red carpet events, where the women are often wearing high heels that even out the expected height difference. But high heels or not, these couples’ crazy height differences are always apparent. While there are plenty of males that tower over their female counterparts, it’s impressive just how many men in Hollywood aren’t afraid to date women that also overshadow them at every red carpet event.
Here are 16 Hollywood Couples With Crazy Height Differences.
16. Clare Grant (5’7”) and Seth Green (5’4”)
Though she’s far from the tallest woman in Hollywood, with a pair of high heels on, actress Clare Grant absolutely towers over her husband and fellow actor, Seth Green. Though Green is six inches shorter than the average American man and a full three inches shorter than his wife, the actor and co-creator of Robot Chicken isn’t above making light of the issue, and it’s clear that the couple genuinely shares the same sense of humor and nerdy interests.
The two met at Golden Apple Comics in 2006 and have been known to appear at SDCC with each other on an annual basis. They’ve also worked together on a number of projects, with Grant providing voice over work for Robot Chicken, while she is already set to star in the upcoming film Changeland, which is also written and directed by Green.
15. Chris Hemsworth (6’3”) and Elsa Pataky (5’3”)
It’s no surprise that the actor playing the God of Thunder in the MCU is an absolute giant in real life. At 6’3” and an estimated 220 pounds, Chris is by far the biggest of the Hemsworth brothers, and the Australian actor stands an entire foot over his wife of seven years, Elsa Pataky.
Pataky is a Spanish model and actress who is probably best known for her role as Elena Neves in the Fast and Furious franchise. She has also appeared in 2006’s Snakes on a Plane and is already slated to star in 12 Strong, a 2018 war film where she will appear alongside her husband. Though this is the first film that the couple will star in together, Pataky also had an uncredited role as a stand-in for Natalie Portman in Thor: The Dark World — as both actresses happen to be the exact same height.
14. Erica Schmidt (5’6”) and Peter Dinklage (4’5”)
As one would probably expect, Peter Dinklage is indeed shorter than Erica Schmidt, his wife of 12 years. The two eloped in Las Vegas in 2005, when Dinklage’s film career was just getting rolling with movies like Elf and The Station Agent, while Schmidt was working as a theater director. The two have been adamant about keeping their personal lives private, though they are parents to two children, born in 2011 and 2017.
Dinklage was born with the most common form of dwarfism known as Achondroplasia, which stunts the growth of the arms and legs, leaving him with a height of 4’5”. However, this actually isn’t much shorter than many of Dinklage’s Game of Thrones co-stars, with Maisie Williams and Emilia Clarke both standing at 5’1” and 5’2”, respectively. Even Kit Harrington is a bit on the short side at 5’8” — two inches shorter than the average Brit.
13. Dax Shepard (6’2”) and Kristen Bell (5’1”)
One of the shorter actresses on this list, Kristen Bell is over a foot shorter than her husband, fellow actor Dax Shepard. The two Michigan natives began dating in 2007 and announced their engagement in 2010. However, both Shepard and Bell refused to get married until same-sex marriage was legalized in California, and the two officially tied the knot on October 17, 2013. They currently have two daughters that were born in 2013 and 2014.
The two have also starred in multiple movies together, including Hit and Run and this year’s CHiPS, which were both written and directed by Shepard. More recently, Shepard starred as Mikey in Netflix’s Wet Hot American Summer: Ten Years Later, while his wife has also worked on a number of other Netflix originals, including BoJack Horseman and Big Mouth.
12. Katie Holmes (5’9”) and Tom Cruise (5’7”)
Though they haven’t been together since 2012, we’d be remiss if we didn’t mention one of the more iconic Hollywood couples where the woman towers over the man. In this case, there are only two inches between Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes, but with Holmes’s tendency to wear super high heels during red carpet events, the height difference between the two always appeared much more significant.
In fact, Holmes is far from the first taller woman that Cruise has dated – or even married, for that matter. Both of Cruise’s ex-wives, Mimi Rogers and Nicole Kidman, were also taller than the actor, with Kidman actually standing a full four inches above Cruise. But like many other leading men who are a bit on the short side, Cruise is often made to look taller in his films to give the character’s a more imposing appearance.
11. Will Smith (6’2”) and Jada Pinkett Smith (5’0”)
With a height difference of 14 inches, Will Smith stands well over a head taller than his wife even when the actress is wearing a pair of impressively high heels. The two have been married for just over two decades now, making them one of the longest-running marriages for two Hollywood A-listers.
On top of two very successful acting careers — which have collectively grossed the couple an estimated net worth well over a quarter billion dollars — both Will and Jada Pinkett-Smith have used their good fortune to give back to the community. Together, they’ve founded their own foundation which aims to support inner-city youths along with their families. Meanwhile, their own children, Jaden and Willow (who seem to take after their mom in the height department), have already launched successful careers of their own.
10. Erin Darke (5’7”) and Daniel Radcliffe (5’5”)
At five inches shy of the average male height, Daniel Radcliffe was shorter than most of his Harry Potter co-stars, including Rupert Grin, Tom Felton, and Bonnie Wright — who played his on-screen love interest. Similarly, Radcliffe’s real-life love interest, Erin Darke, stands a full two inches taller than her boyfriend of five years.
The two began dating in 2012 after working together on the set of Kill Your Darlings, a biographical drama that covers the early years of the Beat Generation, with Radcliffe playing the leading role of Allen Ginsberg while Darke starred in a supporting role as Gwendolyn.
Though the height difference doesn’t seem to be a problem for the couple, Darke was reportedly worried over Radcliffe’s shocking weight loss that the actor put himself through for this year’s Jungle, which follows the real-life survival story of an Israeli adventurer lost in the Amazon rainforest. Thankfully, Radcliffe safely put the weight back on following the film’s production.
9. Liam Hemsworth (6’3”) and Miley Cyrus (5’5”)
Though Chris may seem like the biggest Hemsworth brother by far thanks to his sheer muscle mass, he’s actually the same height as his 27-year-old younger brother, Liam.
After years of acting on Australian television, both brothers actually had their feature film debuts in 2009, with Chris briefly appearing up as George Kirk in Star Trek, while Liam popped up in the sci-fi thriller Knowing.
Since then, both Liam’s and Chris’s careers and personal lives have been the subject of much media attention, including Liam’s on-and-off relationship with pop superstar Miley Cyrus. Even with heels on and an above average height of 5’5”, Cyrus still can’t help but look short next to Hemsworth.
After a period apart, the singer has confirmed that the two are once again engaged.
8. Sophie Turner (5’9”) and Joe Jonas (5’7”)
As we’ve already mentioned, many of the main actors in HBO’s Game of Thrones are surprisingly short, including Maisie Williams, Emilia Clarke and even Kit Harrington. Of course, there are a number of notable characters that tower over everyone else, and while Sophie Turner is nowhere near the height of Gwendoline Christie — who plays Brienne of Tarth and stands at 6’3” — Turner is still a good deal taller than the average woman, as well as her fiancé Joe Jonas.
In fact, with a height of 5’9” and a newly announced engagement, it’s hard to believe that Turner is only 21 years old. Not long ago we remember the actress as the feeble and most naive member of the Stark children, but in just a few short seasons, we’ve literally watched the actress grow into the mature young woman that she is today.
7. Channing Tatum (6’1”) and Jenna Dewan (5’3”)
Channing Tatum and fellow actor Jenna Dewan for eight years and counting. Dewan began working in the entertainment industry as a backup dancer to some of the biggest female pop stars of the last few decades, including Janet Jackson, Christina Aguilera, and Pink. In the early 2000s, she began her acting career before starring alongside her future husband in the 2006 film Step Up.
The two began dating after they finished filming and went on to get married in 2009 before having a daughter four years later – there’s nearly a foot of height between them.
Tatum and Dewan have only worked together once since Step Up, with Dewan appearing in more TV shows, including American Horror Story and Supergirl. Meanwhile, Tatum continues to turn out multiple hit movies year after year, including this year’s The Lego Batman Movie, Logan Lucky, and Kingsman: The Golden Circle.
6. Eniko Parrish (5’7”) and Kevin Hart (5’4”)
Being one of the shorter male celebrities in Hollywood, Kevin Hart has never been afraid to poke fun at his small stature during his stand-up routine, though the comedian and actor also said that he’s never actually been bothered by his height. In an interview with Oprah, Hart said that he doesn’t “believe in doing things to manufacture my body to appeal to what I think people might like.”
At 5’4”, Hart stand a full three inches shorter than his wife Eniko Parrish. The two were married last year and are currently expecting a baby. Though Parrish is not part of the entertainment industry, the couple has been in the news a lot lately following an extortion case surrounding an alleged tape that shows Hart romantically involved with another woman. Despite the unfortunate news, Hart has been forthcoming and apologetic about the issue, and the couple has been seen together multiple times since the news broke.
5. Sacha Baron Cohen (6’3”) and Isla Fisher (5’3”)
Sacha Baron Cohen and Isla Fisher first met back in 2002 at a party in Fisher’s home country of Australia and the two were engaged just two years later, though they didn’t end up tying the knot until 2010, when the actress was pregnant with their second child.
A full foot taller than his wife, Cohen has put his height to good use playing the gangly and awkward characters of Borat and Ali G. Because the actor truly likes to disappear into his outlandish and often controversial characters, both Cohen and Fisher largely keep out of the public eye.
While Cohen currently only has one movie in development — which isn’t expected to be out until 2019 — we can expect to see Fisher in a number of upcoming films within the next year, including the 2018 comedy Tag, where she will star alongside Annabelle Wallis and Jon Hamm.
4. Adrianne Curry (5’11”) and Christopher Knight (5’9”)
A relationship that’s at the center of a reality TV show usually isn’t built to last, which is exactly what happened with former America’s Next Top Model winner Adrianne Curry and former Brady Bunch star Christopher Knight.
In this instance, the two-inch height difference was the least of this couples worries, with Knight being twice as old as Curry and both having the tendency to insult each other publicly. They starred on the reality shows The Surreal Life and later My Fair Brady, which chronicled the couple’s ups and downs. After marrying in 2006, the pair would eventually appear on the Dr. Phil show to attempt to resolve their marital problems, only to get separated in 2011 and divorced two years later.
Since then, Curry has seemed to keep her relationship status out of the public eye, while Knight has moved onto his fourth wife, whom he married in 2016.
3. Jason Momoa (6’4”) and Lisa Bonet (5’2”)
Clocking in at 6’4″ with a weight around 230 pounds, Justice League star Jason Momoa towers over his partner and fellow actor, Lisa Bonet, who comes in at just 5’2”. The couples height difference is only amplified by Momoa’s sheer size, which is no doubt why the actor is often cast in imposing roles, including his brief but memorable appearance as Khal Drogo in the first season of Game of Thrones.
Though the couple was thought to have been married since 2007, the two actually didn’t tie the knot until earlier this year. Momoa also recently stated that he actually had a crush on Bonet since he was eight years old after watching her on The Cosby Show. But despite the height and 11 year age difference, these two actors have been together for the past 12 years — pretty impressive by Hollywood standards.
2. Cameron Diaz (5’9”) and Benji Madden (5’6”)
Standing a full three inches taller than her husband, it doesn’t take a set of heels to make the height difference between Cameron Diaz and Benji Madden already significant enough.
The couple began dating in 2014 and ended up tying the knot just seven months later at the actress’s home in Beverly Hills. The two were introduced by Nicole Richie, who is married to Benji’s brother, James Madden — making Diaz and Richie sister-in-laws. Both Benji and James Madden are members of the American punk band Good Charlotte that was formed back in 1996, and the group is currently on tour following the release of their 2016 album Youth Authority.
Meanwhile, Diaz has taken an active step back from acting to focus on her personal life. The last film she appeared in was 2014’s Annie, alongside Jamie Foxx and Quvenzhane Wallis.
1. Wladimir Klitschko (6’6”) and Hayden Panettiere (5’0”)
The average height difference between males and females is only six inches — now just imagine adding another foot to that equation?
This is exactly the case between actress Hayden Panettiere and former Ukrainian boxer Wladimir Klitschko, who stands at six and a half feet tall and weighs a whopping 240 pounds — making this size difference no joke.
Most people probably first encounter Panettiere as the cute yet tenacious Sheryl Yoast in Disney’s Remember the Titans, but the actress more recently stars in ABC/ CMT series Nashville, for which she received two Golden Globe nominations for Best Supporting Actress. Panettiere also appeared in NBC’s Heroes from 2006 to 2010, which is when she began dating the heavyweight boxer.
The two have since become engaged, with Panettiere giving birth to their first daughter in 2014.
