The Big Mouth season 3 finale signaled some major changes were coming for the show’s characters, and here’s a rundown of the episode’s plot. Netflix’s adult-oriented animation Big Mouth follows a group of seventh grade kids – including Nick (Nick Kroll), Andrew (John Mulaney), Jessi (Jessi Klein), Jay (Jason Mantzoukas) and Missy (Jenny Slate/Ayo Edebiri) – as they navigate the trials and tribulations of puberty with the help - and sometimes hindrance - of shoulder angels known as hormone monsters. The series was co-created by Kroll and his real-life BFF Andrew Goldberg and inspired by their own experiences coming of age in the suburbs of New York’s Westchester County where the series is set.

Big Mouth has gotten rave reviews for its bawdy but heartfelt exploration of the issues many adolescent kids face – from friendships and mental health to sex and sexuality – and its third season was no different. While Jay came to terms with his bisexuality and Jessi dealt with depression, their middle school production of a musical version of the 1994 erotic thriller Disclosure gave them a lesson in sexism and sexual harassment and created a love triangle between Nick, his best pal Andrew and their classmate Missy.

Many of the ongoing storylines in Big Mouth season 3 came to a head in its final episode. Titled “Super Mouth”, the season 3 finale was set during the days leading up to the kids’ seventh grade graduation and saw them gain superpowers after a freak storm hit their hometown. Nick, Andrew and Missy’s boyfriend Lars (Neil Casey) came to superhero-style blows over Missy, while Jessi’s newfound power of making people tell the truth by touching them led to her finding out her mom intends to move them both to New York.

It soon turned out the storm and the powers it gave everybody were really part of their classmate Caleb’s (Joe Wengert) imagination as he watched the friends bicker with each other and drew their superhero personas. The kids’ superpowers may have been imaginary, but their conflicts and problems were very real. The Big Mouth season 3 finale ended with Nick and Andrew parting ways as friends, Missy swearing off all three of her love interests and Jessi’s mother planting a for sale sign outside their house.

Big Mouth’s theme song (Charles Bradley’s version of Black Sabbath’s “Changes”) has always been a befitting motif for the show but was especially pertinent during the finale as several characters faced major changes and many went their separate ways. Plenty of cliffhangers were presented during the Big Mouth season 3 finale too – from the future of Nick and Andrew’s friendship to how Jessi would fare living in the city – but luckily all that and more was addressed in the show’s fourth season.
