Netflix ordered three new seasons of Big Mouth. Created by Nick Kroll, Andrew Goldberg, Mark Levin, and Jennifer Flackett, the adult animated sitcom chronicles the experiences of young men and women going through puberty. Big Mouth season 1 premiered in September 2017, and was followed by Big Mouth season 2 in March 2018. Last November, Netflix ordered Big Mouth season 3.

In Big Mouth, Kroll voices Nick Birch, a late-bloomer who struggles with his sexual feelings and self-confidence. Kroll also voices numerous other characters, most notably Maurice the Hormone Monster, who fuels many of Nick’s insecurities. Big Mouth is based on Kroll’s experiences with the aforementioned Goldberg, as the two have been friends since childhood. Former Saturday Night Live writer John Mulaney voices Nick’s friend Andrew Glouberman. Big Mouth’s supporting voice cast is comprised of numerous comedians, including Jason Mantzoukas, Jenny Slate, Maya Rudolph, Fred Armisen, Jordan Peele as the Ghost of Duke Ellington, and a pit bull named Featuring Ludacris, among other characters.

Per a Netflix press release, the streaming service has reached a multi-year deal with Brutus Pink, a new production company established by Big Mouth’s four creators. Incidentally, Big Mouth season 4 has officially been ordered along with seasons 5 and 6, thus affording the creative team even more flexibility as their characters continue to learn more about themselves and their bodies. The Brutus Pink team noted that "Netflix has given us the best creative experience imaginable, and we’ve been able to build an amazing community of talented writers, actors, producers and artists.” On Twitter, Netflix’s news account See What’s Next acknowledged the Big Mouth renewal. Check out the tweet below:

Big Mouth’s renewal comes just days after Netflix canceled the adult animated sitcom Tuca & Bertie, featuring Tiffany Haddish and Ali Wong in voice roles as bird women. Given that Tuca & Bertie season 1 currently holds a 100 percent Tomatometer score on Rotten Tomatoes, the cancellation surprised many fans, along with the series creator Lisa Hanawalt. She noted that Netflix’s algorithm didn’t suggest her own show to her, evidenced by her reply to author Dana Schwartz. The exchange was the result of comments made by Netflix’s Jarett Wieselman, who asked for subscriber feedback about how the streaming service promotes their programs. Netflix has renewed other animated series such as F Is for Family, Disenchantment, Paradise PD, and Love, Death & Robots.

In relation to Tuca & Bertie, Big Mouth may simply be even more relatable for Netflix subscribers. Plus, the series balances out the experiences of both male and female characters, and explores the plethora of emotions they feel via surrealistic personas. For Netflix, it comes down to the numbers, and Big Mouth's comedic aesthetic has made it a big hit.
