Unlike her male counterpart, Maurice, Constance Harland, better known as Connie, is a much less filthy — but equally violent — Hormone Monster. Initially introduced to help Jessi out with her puberty, she later gets assigned to Nick Birch as well, suggesting the diversity and depth of her skillset.
In Big Mouth, Connie is shown to have been around since the beginning of the world itself, along with Maury and presumably the others of her kind. Connie makes mistakes often, given the nature of her job, but there are times when her advice has been absolutely spot-on. Interestingly, she is the most balanced of all the Hormone Monsters.
Best: Introduces Jessi To Her Vagina
Connie might come on a bit too strong at times, but she's always there for Jessi when she is needed the most. For instance, the young middle schooler is woefully unfamiliar with her own body, in part due to her sex-ed teacher being Coach Steve, but mostly because of the patriarchal mindset of society.
However, Connie ensures a "meeting" between Jessi and her vagina, even hosting the event in order to make Jessi comfortable about experiencing the various facets of her developing sexuality.
Worst: Shoplifting Lipstick
Many teens act out towards their parents, a set of behaviors that are accelerated by the hormones coursing through their veins. At one point, Connie decides that the best way to have Jessi undergo the so-called thrills of adulthood is through juvenile crime.
She tells her charge that if her mom wouldn't allow her to act all grown-up and mature, then she has every right to take control of her destiny by herself, even if it means resorting to petty thievery. Thankfully, this spree of larceny wears off pretty quickly.
Best: Bolsters Jessi's Bodily Confidence
As an extension of her personal intimacy, Connie is exuberant when Missy's mom takes the two girls to a private spa. In fact, she does a whole song-and-dance with the rest of the ladies present.
This shows the children that bodies come in various forms, shapes, sizes, and colors, and that each version is equally important or deserving of respect, from the self or through others' perspective. Both Jessi and Missy come out of this experience with a better understanding of themselves.
Worst: Insults Jessi's Mom
On another note, Connie has a habit of getting enraged at the same time as Jessi (which is expected), but she fans the flames of the young woman's fury to practically comic extensions.
She tells her to refer to her mother by her first name, Shannon, to purposefully disrespect her for having the "audacity" to leave her father for another woman. Connie continues along these lines for quite some time, bringing Shannon to tears on several occasions, and through no fault of her own, whatsoever.
Best: Encourages Nick To Be Vulnerable
Nick is forced to suffer through the ridiculous shenanigans of the decrepit, inept Rick, as well as the complete noob that is Tyler, but he finally obtains respite in the form of Connie.
At first, he hates the idea of having a "female" Hormone Monster, which seriously affects his self-confidence, but this doubt quickly changes to acceptance when he finds that she's far more efficient at dealing with his sexuality in a feminine way, so to speak. Connie tries to get Nick to relax his insecurities a little, helping him come out of his shell a bit more.
Worst: Tells Jessi To Bully Missi To Fit In With Devin
Connie tells Jessi that it is essential she hang out with the "Queen Bee" of her school, Devin, and to ensure that people see them together so that their connection is made official.
While this seems theoretically sensible, it results in Missy taking the brunt of Jessi's self-loathing, as the girls gang up on the most naive member of the sleepover party. Connie is supposed to sense the difference between teasing and bullying, but this scenario clearly didn't ring any alarm bells for her.
Best: Explains That "Blue Balls" Is A Myth
After Jessi starts dating the ninth-grader, Michael Angelo, he decides to use one of the oldest excuses in the dating book to get his girlfriend to stimulate him. He claims that boys get something known as "blue balls" if they are not brought to climax, smoothly avoiding the possibility that he could be helping himself out.
This creates undue pressure on Jessi, who almost complies with his wishes, but then has a rather hilarious conversation with his penis and ruins the mood (for Michael Angelo, anyway). Connie exclaims that he could have done it himself if he needed it so badly.
Worst: Tells Jessi To Commit Arson
Maury might seem like the more aggressive type of Hormone Monster, but Connie is easily the most violent. She goes into a frenzy at the slightest provocation, which does not help Jessi — especially when combined with the lows brought on by Depression Kitty.
Connie has even gone to the point of suggesting that Jessi set things on fire to express her hatred of her living situation, which may have actually occurred if the child in question happened to be someone other than Jessi.
Best: Reveals To Nick His Feelings For Jessi
As Nick's Hormone Monster, Connie assists in helping the confused boy come to terms with quite a few problems he had been having. One of them is the subdued emotions he apparently has for Jessi, which is consequently stoked by the fires of friendship into a tentative sort of romance.
The resultant relationship doesn't last for very long and turns the two of them into bitter enemies when it ends, but at least Nick has the courage to try something without running away first.
Worst: Suggests Jessi Perform A Sex Act On Jay Without Asking For Consent
When Jessi and Jay are making out for the first time, Connie suggests Jessi digitally pleasure Jay without asking for consent. The Hormone Monster pretty much tells her charge to ignore Jay's boundaries and do whatever she wants.
If that's not bad enough, Connie's reference to Jay's "tushie" as toffee-colored has some rather rank undertones of racism; just because he's darker-skinned than most of the other characters doesn't mean that she can refer to his skin color in such a crude manner.
