Big Little Lies Season 3 Gets Disappointing Update From Witherspoon

Actress Shailene Woodley hinted at the possibility of a third season for the popular HBO series Big Little Lies. Woodley, who played the youngest of the show's Monterey 5, has kept busy since the second season's release in 2019. In addition to filming for Netflix's period romance The Last Letter From Your Lover, due to stream this summer, audiences can see Woodley in the upcoming thriller Misanthrope and the STX legal drama The Mauritanian.

Big Little Lies premiered in 2017 and starred Woodley, Nicole Kidman, Reese Witherspoon, Zoë Kravitz, and Laura Dern as the five main women of the show, the Monterey 5. The series also boasted an impressive list of supporting actors, including Adam Scott, Alexander Skarsgård and Meryl Streep. Based on the 2014 novel of the same name, the first and second season follow the lives of the five women who live in the beautiful coastal town of Monterey, California. Witherspoon and Kidman served as two of several producers on the show, with Witherspoon's media company Hello Sunshine as one of the production companies behind it.

In a recent interview with THR, Woodley opened up about a number of personal topics, one of which included her itch to get the ball rolling on a third season for the celebrated HBO series. While Kidman hinted at a season 3 for Lies in a 2020 interview with Marie Claire, not much has been disclosed from other cast members until now. Woodley didn't say anything official was on the books, but she did note that it's a matter of getting everyone's schedules in sync. While the COVID-19 pandemic put an inevitable halt on industry production, fellow cast members seem eager to get the series in motion again.

“We all constantly say, ‘When are we doing season three? How do we make that happen?’ I’d like to say, knock on wood, that it is happening."

Woodley's natural approach to acting is a technique she describes as one she used for Jane's character in the show. As a tremendously talented underdog in a sea of big name actors, Woodley's subdued character directly represents the quality of her persona in real life. Despite managing to stay busy with a laundry list of creative projects, the actress has enjoyed quality time for herself and fiancé Aaron Rodgers.

HBO has managed to give fans a taste of suspenseful material with actors from the show, with shows like The Undoing, starring Kidman. With eight Emmys under its belt and an average of 10 million viewers per episode, the demand for a continuation of Big Little Lies is inevitable. The inherent tension that builds from the very beginning of the series hit an all time high once Streep's character got thrown into the mix. In light of how the second season ended, audiences will be anxious to see how fate plays out for the characters after Kravitz's Bonnie decides to make her shocking confession.
