Big Little Lies Season 3 Will Happen Eventually, Says Shailene Woodley

Monterey Five fans rejoice - actress Nicole Kidman has hinted at the possibility of a season 3 for Big Little Lies. The hit HBO show based on Liane Moriarty's novel debuted in 2017 to rave reviews. However, despite positive reception from both critics and fans, executive producer David E. Kelley has stated that he's satisfied with season 2's ending and doesn't expect there to be a season 3.

Big Little Lies centers around the lives of the Monterey Five: Celeste Wright, Madeline Martha Mackenzie, Jane Chapman, Renata Klein, and Bonnie Carlson. Season 2 begins with the five women still reeling from the murder of Celeste's abusive husband; to further complicate matters, Meryl Streep's Mary Louise Wright arrives in town to both uncover the truth about her son's death and fight for custody of Celeste's children. Season 2 of Big Little Lies builds up to an explosive finale, where most of the Monterey Five receive happy endings. For one, Celeste wins custody over her kids, Madeline renews her wedding vows with Ed, and Jane starts dating Corey.

Kidman teases the possibility of season 3 of Big Little Lies in an interview with Marie claire. Kidman reveals that she's still extremely close to her Big Little Lies costars, especially Reese Witherspoon. She also dishes that everyone in the cast wants "to work together again," and that the show's writers have already brainstormed potential season 3 plot ideas. You can check out Kidman's full statement on Big Little Lies below:

"Reese [Witherspoon] and I talk or text once a week. She’s just moved back to Nashville and we’re really close. We all just want to work together again. I texted Zoë [Kravitz] and Laura [Dern] and they’re in. [Writers] David [E. Kelley] and Liane have a really good idea for it. Watch this space!"

While the Big Little Lies cast seems more than ready to get back on set, it's not yet clear whether such a reunion will be realistic. For one, the show's all-star cast not only features Kidman and Witherspoon, but Laura Dern, Zoe Kravitz, and Shailene Woodley, all of whom are among the most prolific actresses in Hollywood — as such, coordinating shooting times with just the Monterey Five alone would be nothing short of a scheduling nightmare. Still, it seems that the main cast is willing to try and make things work, even if it will be challenging to lock down everyone's schedules.

Although season 2 wrapped up many major storylines, there's definitely still room for exploration in season 3. For one, season 2 ended with the Monterey Five showing up and walking into a police station, presumably to confess to Perry Wright's murder. If season 3 does happen, it'll be interesting to follow the five protagonists through the repercussions of this explosive confession, as well as see what other twists and turns are in store on Big Little Lies.
