Big Little Lies

HBO's small screen adaptation of Liane Moriarty's book Big Little Lies was such a huge success that they ordered a second season. Fans of the critically acclaimed mini series can celebrate because season 2 has officially begun filming, hinting that we may see our favourite cast of characters sooner than we thought.

The second season, which will bring back original cast members Reese Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman, Shailene Woodley, Laura Dern, Zoë Kravitz, Adam Scott, James Tupper, Gordon Klein, and Iain Armitage, who will all reprise their roles from season 1. In an exciting announcement, Meryl Streep is also joining the cast as Celeste’s mother-in-law, Mary Louise Wright. Steep will play the mother of the late Perry Wright, played by Alexander Skarsgård, who met a tragic yet satisfying end during the season one finale. Celeste arrives in Monterey looking for answers and concerned about the well being of her twin grandsons.

Both Zoë Kravitz and Shailene Woodley have taken to social media to share pictures of their respective characters, Bonnie and Jane, back in action and ready to begin filming. While Kravitz and Woodley are the first actors from the mini-series to post character pictures, star and executive producer Reese Witherspoon told Seth Myers during an appearance last week promoting her new film A Wrinkle in Time that filming was set to begin on Friday, March 16. Season one of the mini series followed Moriarty's book, detailing the lives of three women played by Witherspoon, Kidman and Woodley. Witherspoon and Kidman were friends who embraced newcomer Woodley only to discover a past connection that shocked them all. David E. Kelley, who wrote the scripts for the first season based on Moriarty's book, will once again write season 2 based partially on a new story penned by Moriarty. While Jean-Marc Vallée directed season 1, Andrea Arnold will now assume the director role.  Vallée will remain an executive producer alongside both Witherspoon and Kidman.

The first season ended with Bonnie saving Celeste as she's being attacked by her abusive husband, resulting in Perry's death. All the main female characters witness the death and remain steadfast in their resolve to protect each other. While we don't know much about the storyline for season two, it will no doubt explore how these 'big little lies' impact each of the character's lives as these women all deal with the knowledge of exactly how Perry died. We'll see how the the bonds of friendship between these women are tested and grow and how they tackle their lives as they continue to parent their children. We also saw Witherspoon's Madeline confessing to cheating on her husband Ed, played by Adam Scott, so we'll no doubt be treated to a storyline about the ramifications of that revelation. HBO is promising that things could 'get messy' when our favorite Monterey housewives return to deal with all the drama that unfolded in season one, and fans cannot wait.

Already boasting an impressive cast of powerhouse women, the addition of Streep will no doubt ensure that season two will be just as incredible as season one of Big Little Lies. And with the script based on another of Moriarty's stories, fans are absolutely excited to see this cast return to the small screen. HBO hasn't announced an air date yet but Screen Rant will keep you up to date on all Big Little Lies news.
