As fans await the season 2 premiere of Big Little Lies, it turns out that the award-winning HBO series may not get a third season. Despite its popularity, the show's executive producer isn't confident that there are more stories to tell in the lives of Madeline, Celeste, Jane, and all the other troubled socialites in Monterey, California.

By the end of Big Little Lies' first season, the season-long murder mystery unravels, and though there is closure, the story is hardly over. Unexpected friendships have formed, but with the good comes the criminal, and season 2 of Big Little Lies will explore the consequences of events that previously unfolded. The second season also introduces Meryl Streep to the cast as a character who will no doubt add some unavoidable friction, and there are plenty of other loose ends from season 1 that the new season will undoubtedly tie up. In fact, audiences can almost guarantee that the season will wrap up everything from season 2 as future seasons of the show aren't likely.

According to VultureBig Little Lies executive producer David E. Kelley revealed that the show likely won't get a third season during the TV Critics Association panel in California. He explained that there is currently no word on a third season and that he's more than satisfied with how season 2 ends. He said, “There is no such plan now. We like our closure at the end of season two, so that will probably be it.” And, even though Nicole Kidman agreed that there aren't any plans to continue, Reese Witherspoon responded to his comment, saying, "You sat here and said that last time.”

While the early end of the series isn't likely to sit well with fans, Big Little Lies was never intended to go past season 1 in the first place. It was meant to be a limited series, telling a single story in a single season - even if there were some loose narrative threads left over (and if there were, it was likely deliberate). In fact, it was the strong support of the fans that convinced HBO to bring the show back for another go.

On one hand, it's perfectly reasonable that fans would want more seasons. The quality of the show speaks for itself (as do all of its Golden Globe and Emmy wins). However, on the other hand, quantity rarely measures up with quality, and if the show's creators are convinced that two seasons is all they need to tell the absolute best story they can without soiling the show's reputation, then so be it.
