While Big Little Lies arrived with the categorization of a miniseries, giving viewers the expectation that it would only last a single season, the story returned for a second season of seven episodes, much to fan delight. With a star-studded A-list cast that included Reese Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman, Shailene Woodley, Alexander Skarsgard, Adam Scott, Zoe Kravitz, and Laura Dern, with the addition of Meryl Streep for season two, it's no wonder the drama is considered one of the best TV shows based on a book.
And while much of the story was pretty heavy, that didn't stop fans from creating some hilarious memes to honor some of the most memorable characters, scenes, and lines.
Big Little Lies Meryl vs. Devil Wears Prada Meryl
Anyone who saw The Devil Wears Prada knows that Meryl Streep's character of the aloof and judgemental Miranda Priestly, editor-in-chief of a fashion magazine, could be downright terrifying, especially for a young up-and-comer getting her first job as the woman's personal assistant. But her character in Big Little Lies trumped that one by a mile.
Not only was she a terrifying motherly figure, but her look was unassuming, with a sweater, glasses, soft speech, and an innocent bob cut. Yet she managed to threaten the very livelihood of Nicole Kidman's Celeste. And that scream scene? It was the thing of legends.
I Will Not, Not Be Rich
It's one of the most quoted lines from the show and it's understandable because it wasn't only Renata's extreme privilege she was screaming about in this scene when her husband's shady tactics risked everything. It was the fact that it was she who worked so hard as the breadwinner to earn all of that money. And she had no intention of losing it, mostly for that reason, which is why fans loved the character so much.
Even though Renata could be judgemental and haughty, she was also proud because of everything she accomplished on her own. In the same episode, Renata took off in her car looking to blow off some steam. And that she did, begging for everyone to just let her "have her moment."
The Monterey Five
The friends on the series from the high-end community were, of course, known as The Monterey Five, as fans know. They were suspected of having something to do with Perry's death in the first season finale, which remains the highest-rated episode of the series to date. And they were often looped together as if they were one entity.
While it initially seemed like they might get away with their crimes, the second season proved that they were far from being in the clear. And Meryl Streep's character Mary Louise had a lot to do with the pending drama.
My Justice League
While the Monterey Five were technically responsible for the death of Perry, the fan who created this meme clearly feels as though they were bringing justice to the world by getting rid of a terrible, abusive man, albeit by an accidental death.
The Justice League is a group of superheroes, but in this meme-maker's eyes, the real Justice League is made up of these five women from a TV drama. They might wear slacks and summer dresses instead of capes and tights. But superheroes come in all kinds.
Sundays In Bed
Any fan of the show knows that when Renata gave this look, hair fresh in front of her face, she was about to sweep it back and say or do something that demonstrated her power, leadership, and confidence.
The idea of someone having this same look, or perhaps the complete opposite look, while watching the show in bed is downright hilarious. Renata indeed could make anyone feel like they could quit their jobs and move to this fictional small town where rumors, gossip, judgement, and wealth run rampant, yet deep friendships with people who would literally break the law to save you can be made.
Ice Cream, Anyone?
It's one of the most memed images from the series. How could it not be with Reese Witherspoon's character Madeline about to throw ice cream at the back of Meryl Streep's head?
There have been many iterations of the image online, but this meme adds some hilarious commentary, suggesting that Madeline represents how the person feels when they want to throw their opinions at just about anyone who will listen to them, whether they asked for them or not. Fans of the show know that Madeline always had something to say, had an opinion about everything, could sometimes be selfish, and reveled in being at the center of drama and gossip.
Mornings On The Balcony
Everyone on Big Little Lies had a house right by the water where they could hop out on their balconies, or even sit outside in the sand, and stare out into the water. They usually had a cup of coffee in hand. At night, the java was replaced with a glass of wine.
This is where they did most of their thinking, pondering what happened during the day, the lies they had been telling, and how they were going to get out of their individual messes.
No Beachfront
What was so interesting about Big Little Lies was the juxtaposition of the high society living with the intense drama that occurred there. As noted above, everyone had a beachfront property which would make anyone from the outside looking in think that they had it all.
But any fan of the show knows that money and status doesn't always lead to a happy ending. And every family and main character on the show was dealing with their own drama. That meant they could just as easily be seen fist fighting with one another as they could sipping tea on a patio.
Pink Lawyer Realness
In the second season, Celeste, a lawyer, decided to represent herself in the case for custody of her twins after Mary Louise decided to fight for them. She wanted not only to paint herself as a fit mother, since Mary Louise was arguing that she was not, but also to prove how smart she was. As part of her strategy, conscious or otherwise, Celeste wore a soft pink suit with her hair pulled back.
Meanwhile, way back in another movie, Legally Blonde, Reese Witherspoon donned a darker shade of pink while fighting a case in an epic court scene. In both instances, the women in pink showed their amazing skill and talent and won.
The Finale
With no official announcement of a third season, the season two finale was possibly the final scene of the story. In it, the five women are together at the police station, seemingly having decided to turn themselves in.
The reactions in this meme perfectly show how fans might have felt. Part disbelief that, after everything, the women would admit what happened, part shock, and part understanding that they were probably doing the right thing.
