The rumors that live-action Big Hero 6 characters will be joining the MCU have been debunked. Based on an obscure Marvel Comics series, Big Hero 6 is an animated movie that made its debut in 2014. Though the film was released by Walt Disney Animation just as the MCU was really gaining momentum, Big Hero 6 stood on its own outside of the live-action Marvel bubble. It follows 14-year-old Hiro Hamada who, after the tragic death of his older brother Tadashi, unites a group of science-minded geniuses to save their city from further destruction. The team is aided by Baymax, the helper robot invented by Tadashi.

Though Big Hero 6 was a rousing critical success and a win at the box office, Disney never gave it a traditional sequel. Instead, Big Hero 6: The Series was created for Disney Channel and Disney XD, picking up after the events of the movie. It premiered in 2017 and just came to an end last week. Meanwhile, Disney announced in December there will be another spin-off show: Baymax!. This series will be a Disney+ exclusive and follow the fan favorite character on his own adventures.

Earlier this week, rumors began to fly online suggesting the characters of Big Hero 6 would be making the live-action transition to the MCU. This sent fans into a tizzy, but the excitement was sadly premature. According to Variety, who spoke to a source at Marvel Studios, there are no plans to bring Hiro, Baymax, or anyone else into the MCU fold. This is a team that will be sitting out Phases 4 and 5.

Though the MCU has found success with eclectic teams from Marvel Comics (see: the Guardians of the Galaxy), the Big Hero 6 crew aren't being tapped to join up with the larger universe just yet. This could be for a variety of reasons, from the creation of Baymax! to simply not having the place to fit them in. Marvel has their next several years carefully planned out, and though the Big Hero 6 could appear later, there isn't room for them at this current moment.

Still, if the excitement that swept social media was any indication, there's definite interest in more Big Hero 6. The series was a fun continuation from the movie, and Baymax! has drummed up some anticipation, but clearly there could be more. It would be interesting to see a live-action version of the team suiting up alongside the likes of Spider-Man and Thor, but it's hard to say what the future holds. For now, Big Hero 6 will remain an animated property.
