It's officially the end of an era, and The Big Bang Theory will be wrapping up with a two-part series finale. Following its 12-season run, the series will come to an end this year.

Premiering in 2007, The Big Bang Theory managed to land solid ratings and a dedicated fanbase over the past twelve years. Centered around friends who also happen to be socially-inept physicists, the series was created by Chuck Lorre and Bill Prady, who have roots in shows like Gilmore Girls, The Muppets, Two and a Half Menand Roseanneand who have since created the Big Bang Theory spinoff series Young Sheldonwhich revolves around a younger version of Sheldon Cooper (Jim Parsons). Now, they're waving goodbye to yet another renown sitcom, and they're sending off The Big Bang Theory with a grand farewell, with a full two episodes to bid adieu to the series, the characters, and, of course, the broken elevator.

According to TVLineThe Big Bang Theory will receive a proper two-part series finale. Though details regarding how exactly the series will ultimately wrap up, Lorre revealed that the finale will be comprised of two connected episodes, saying, "It will be an hour - two episodes that will connect. It will be two separate episodes that will have a through line.” However, he did not touch on when exactly the finale will air.

The Big Bang Theory Season 12

Now, even though it's anyone's guess as to how specifically things will wrap up by the season finale, there has already been talk of ways to keep the heart of The Big Bang Theory alive - through yet another spinoff series. Though nothing official has been set in stone, CBS is open to the idea of branching off from the series. As of now, it all comes down to whether or not the show's creative team has a solid enough concept from which CBS can build.

As is the case with most other series finales, the end is bittersweet. On one hand, seeing as Parsons believes that it feels like the right time to end the series, it's smart to go out on a high. On the other hand, simply put, saying goodbye is never fun or easy. Still, though some shows sometimes trip over their own feet in the end, finales tend to satisfy character arcs and long-developing storylines; they're typically stacked with the exact kind of closure fans crave. That said, whether this particular finale ends with some surprising twists remains to be seen.
