There are many elements of The Big Bang Theory that fans continue to find charming and appealing even after the show has stopped airing new episodes. From the characters to the complexity of the scientific subject matter and beyond, TBBT knew how to draw fans in and never let them go. The guys in the show seem to carry the weight of what's happening more often than not, but that doesn't mean the girls should be pushed to one side - and that is especially true for Amy Farrah Fowler.

Throughout the course of her first few appearances, it wasn't exactly clear whether or not Amy would go on to become a regular. Alas, as time went on, everyone got the chance to see the sort of development that allowed her to flourish as a unique part of the cast. Today, the aim is to explore some of the reasons why and how she improved.

Less Robotic

Sheldon and Amy

The idea behind Amy coming into the BBT universe was that she would serve as the female version of Sheldon Cooper.

The proof was in the pudding for the first episode and for many more after that, and while it was an enjoyable part of her persona, to begin with, it started to become quite one dimensional. As time went on, however, that aspect of her personality changed dramatically as she started to loosen up.

Bonding With Bernadette

Amy and Bernadette were not the first two characters that came to mind when thinking about great friendships on the show - and that definitely wasn’t the case when they were first introduced to one another.

Alas, they soon realized that their respective career paths ensured a common bond that wasn’t immediately apparent. When they built on it, great content soon followed and it’s no coincidence that Amy played a big part in making that happen.

Saving Sheldon

Some will suggest that Dr. Sheldon Cooper didn’t need saving from himself after the first few seasons, but he did. The gang came to realize that having a woman in his life was going to be important if only to try and teach him how a man should behave.

Amy was the steady ship and the guiding light that pointed him in the direction of an entirely new lifestyle, and it worked wonders for him.

Developing Social Skills

The simple act of going to a wedding with Leonard or singing in the car with Howard was enough proof to determine that Amy was making progress.

She was an introvert and she needed to understand that there was more to life than working 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Once she was on the right path to becoming a social butterfly, nothing could stop her.

Natural One-Liners

Many other characters in the show had a tendency to overrule Amy whether it be due to their commanding tone or because they just had a more important storyline.

As such, it was made even more entertaining when Amy, arguably the most intelligent member of the gang, popped up with a one-liner that positioned her firmly at the top of the comedic mountain. It wasn’t a regular feature of the show but it was still nice to see.

Penny’s Voice Of Reason

Penny was unique and personable but from time to time, she made mistakes that needed to be corrected. Bernadette wasn’t always the kind of friend that would automatically jump to her aid which allowed Amy to take on that role.

Sometimes she overstepped the mark but as the years went on she established herself as the person Penny would go to if she had a problem - no matter how big or small it may be.

Female Role Model

There are many world-beating scientists out there on the planet, and now, the once male-dominated profession is starting to become far more diverse.

Amy and Bernadette fly the flag for every young girl who wants to grow up and make a real difference in science. She’s a role model in every sense of the term and you can feel that leadership quality starting to attach itself to Amy as the seasons go on.

Getting Married

Amy and Sheldon's wedding

The radiant Amy looked like an angel as she finally tied the knot with the man she loves. A few years prior Sheldon would’ve run a mile if presented with this situation but when push came to shove, he stepped up to the plate and made his way down that aisle.

Amy did too, showcasing her faith in the relationship that she had always strived to have with her soulmate.

Friendship With Penny

In addition to simply being the ‘voice of reason’ in the mind of Penny, it’s worth noting that she was undeniably Amy’s best friend - and that’s not a commodity she had for many years prior.

If she was going to step outside of her bubble and become a new woman, Penny was the catalyst behind that operation. Without her then it’s easy to see how there would’ve been very little room for growth.

Winning The Nobel Prize

Sheldon and Amy both worked unbelievably hard throughout all twelve seasons to make a name for themselves in their respective fields. Finally, in the season finale, they reached the pinnacle of physics by earning the Nobel Prize together.

It was a stunning way to bring an end to the show and it capped off the rise of their unconventional relationship. It may have been an obvious ending for some, but that isn’t always a bad thing.
