The Big Bang Theory's Debbie Wolowitz was never seen on camera but she can be heard throughout the series with her iconic New York accent. As a divorced mother of one, Debbie dedicated her life to her son and found it hard to let go of that life as Howard grew. Even as a working adult with a master's degree in engineering, Howard still lived at home.

The actress who portrayed Debbie Wolowitz (Carol Ann Susi) sadly passed away in 2014, forcing the series to shift direction with one of the show's most popular moms in season eight. However, Debbie's character lives on in the show's popularity — even after the series concluded after 12 seasons.

She Had A Big Family

As lonely as Debbie appeared to be, she had family to fall back on — they just didn't appear to live nearby. According to Howard, his mother had two sisters, Betty and Gladys. In fact, it was at Gladys's home in Florida that Debbie passed away in her sleep.

In the episode "Prom Equivalency," Howard's cousin Jeannie shows up as Stuart's date. Stuart noted he was picking Jeannie up from her home, which could mean that one of Debbie's sisters lived nearby.

All Her Insecurities Come From Her Failed Marriage

As overrated as Howard can act sometimes, he's been through a lot in his youth that adds some substance to his backstory. After her husband (and Howard's father) Sam abandoned them when Howard was just a kid, Debbie is suggested to have gone downhill. Her abandonment issues from Sam have trickled into her parenting style, which has made it harder for Howard to grow up over the years.

Later in the series, Howard finds out that his dad left a note for Howard on his 18th birthday but he refused to read it because of what he did to their family. He even finds out he has a long-lost brother.

She Goes To The Gym Regularly

In the episode "The Spaghetti Catalyst", Leonard and Penny had just broken up and things were a little tense in the friend group. At the beginning of the episode, Leonard is asking the group if they wanted to hangout but Howard insists he can't because he had to pick his mother up from water aerobics classes. He made an off-colored joke about it being similar to Sea World, but that's Howard for ya. It's later mentioned that Debbie enjoys going to the gym regularly before going home to eat Oreos in the bathtub.

Her Neck Is Larger Than The Average-Sized Man's

In the episode "The 43 Peculiarity," Howard is beside himself when he finds out Sheldon disappears between 2:45 and 3:05 every day. He and Raj follow Sheldon to an old part of the university where Sheldon appears to be spending his time in an empty room. By the time Howard and Raj pick the lock, the number 43 is written on the chalkboard.

As Howard and Raj are brainstorming (without the help or acknowledgment of Sheldon), Howard notes that his mother's neck size is 43. According to Men's Health, the average neck size for a man is 15 inches, while the average neck size for a woman is 13.5 inches.

Her Mustache Is Large And In Charge

Even though we've never seen Mrs. Wolowitz, her appearance has been mentioned throughout the series for years. She has black, curly hair and according to Howard, her physique is similar to a manatee's. She also has one thing that's continuously brought up: a mustache. Howard has done some rude things over the years but his dry insults over his mother's body are pretty low.

On the day of Howard and Bernadette's wedding, Bernadette's father claimed that Debbie had a bigger mustache than him.

She Was Romantically Involved With Her Dentist

Howard is lucky to have a woman like Bernadette, especially considering all the odd things Howard did to get the girl when he was single. Bernadette is beautiful, intelligent, and has a voice of her own. She's also able to stand up to his mother when she gets too pushy.

When Howard came back from space, Bernadette was under the weather and not the best company. Howard decided to surprise his mother but when he showed up he heard a man in the house with her. Debbie is not one to have strange men over, so Howard found it odd. Soon enough, his dentist is trying to escape Debbie through the window!

She's Had A Ton Of Health Issues

Howard saves his mom on TBBT

Aside from her crippling obesity, Debbie appeared to suffer from a slew of health issues. She had gout on Thanksgiving, she had food poisoning and had to be hospitalized after first meeting Bernadette, she broke her leg in season seven... The poor woman was always suffering. And as meme-able as Howard and his mother are when they're screaming at each other, Howard should have gone easier on his mother after so many ailments.

She's Far More Religious Than Howard

According to Howard and co., she's loud, overbearing, and constantly wanting her son to marry a fellow Jewish girl. This could be the reason why Howard waited so long to introduce Bernadette (who is Catholic) to his mother. After all, she was not a fan of Penny's friend from Nebraska, Christy, whom Howard took home to meet her.

In the past, Howard has mentioned spending Hanukkah with his family but he's typically seen celebrating Christmas with his friends, instead of implementing his own religion into the festivities.

She Loved Her Game Shows

As a woman who appears to be home all the time, one has to wonder what she does in her spare time if she doesn't work. In one episode, Debbie is stuck upstairs while the gang is watching Wheel of Fortune downstairs. As smart as Sheldon is, Debbie outsmarted him with some of the answers to the clues. Howard claimed it was his mother's "superpower."

She Had A Different Voice In The Earlier Seasons

The Big Bang Theory Sad Howard

As memorable as Debbie's voice was, fans would be shocked if they went back to the earlier seasons to listen to Debbie scream at Howard again. Her voice is noticeably deeper. She still has a long and slow accent but her tone is far deeper (more similar to Bernadette's impression) than it is in later seasons. In the episode "The Staircase Implementation," there's a flashback scene that shows off her deeper voice perfectly.
