The Big Bang Theory star Kaley Cuoco jokes she thinks extra sex scenes were added just to mess with her and ex Johnny Galecki. For about the entirety of its 12-season run, The Big Bang Theory reigned as the darling of CBS's comedy lineup. The show, which was created by Chuck Lorre and Bill Prady, first premiered in 2007 and, over the years, grew to be one of the biggest shows on television. It even led to a spin-off series, Young Sheldon, which tracks main character Sheldon Cooper's (Jim Parsons) childhood.
The Big Bang Theory follows physicists Sheldon and Leonard (Galecki) who get quite the shock when an attractive and outgoing waitress (Cuoco's Penny) moves in across the hall. Between Sheldon, Leonard, and their friends Howard (Simon Helberg) and Raj (Kunal Nayyar), The Big Bang Theory is thoroughly steeped in pop culture, which over the years led to a slew of fun guest stars. Much of the show's humor stemmed from the cultural gap between the nerdy men and cooler Penny, though that gap couldn't stop romance from springing up between Penny and Leonard.
Cuoco and Galecki also dated in real life early on in The Big Bang Theory's run, and though they broke up after two years, Penny and Leonard ended up getting married. While this wasn't an issue for the two actors, Cuoco admitted she feels their breakup led to some playful behind the scenes meddling. Cuoco recently appeared on Dax Shepard's Armchair Expert podcast, where she opened up about her theory regarding Leonard and Penny's later sex scenes. Cuoco said:
When we broke up obviously it was a little sensitive for a minute. But I remember those weeks that Chuck had written these episodes where all of a sudden our characters were like sleeping together every other second.
Johnny and I talk about it and I think [Chuck] did that on purpose — just to f**k with us. If I was with him, I would ask him because that came out of nowhere. All of a sudden these characters were all up on each other.
Obviously, without Lorre there to confirm, this remains Cuoco's own belief. If this is truly the case, it feels a little insensitive for Lorre to force Cuoco and Galecki together so often in the aftermath of their breakup. It's a questionable move, but at least Cuoco doesn't seem to view it in a poor light. In fact, she laughed at the idea, indicating she doesn't actually mind at what transpired while filming The Big Bang Theory. All in all, it was likely a lighthearted prank for Galecki and Cuoco.
One thing is clear though: Cuoco and Galecki remained good friends following the end of their relationship, which certainly made working together easier. Fans were delighted when Penny and Leonard got married, and some might even hope Young Sheldon will find a way to reference where they ended up. After all, the most recent episode of the Big Bang Theory spin-off revealed something about Sheldon's son with Amy Farrah Fowler (Mayim Bialik), so perhaps Leonard and Penny will get a shout out. Fans should keep their eyes peeled in the future.
