Beyond the Breach #1 is written by Brisson with artist Coucheiro, colorist Patricio Delpeche, and letterer Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou. Couceiro and Delpeche also did the main cover, while an incentive cover is being created by Declan Shalvey. This comic is a fantasy story reminiscent of the '80s with a little bit of sci-fi and a lot of horror-laden adventure. Vanessa, the series protagonist, has a long, dangerous road ahead of her and some new companions who will surely set her back. The first issue releases July 14th. Check out a preview and series summary provided by Aftershock here:

Life sucks for Vanessa. Her mother just died and her boyfriend is cheating on her (with her own sister!). To clear her mind, Vanessa is taking the California road-trip that she's been dreaming about for years.

Her postcard-perfect drive through old growth forests quickly turns when THE BREACH hits. A bizarre anomaly in the sky plunges California into a nightmare-world populated with strange, extra-dimensional creatures. Now Vanessa, along with Dougie, an orphaned child, and Kai, a strange, fuzzball of a beast, must fight to survive if they ever hope to make it back home. If there's even a home to return to.

The preview for this new Aftershock comic is already loaded up with a lot of information and action right from the start. Vanessa is seen cruising in her car, letting her frustrations out freely, when her world LITERALLY turns upside down. Her car is struck by a strange beam before slamming back down on the ground. All around her is a horror show that she has now become the star of. Bizarre—and very hungry—tentacled, Lovecraftian creatures have appeared out of nowhere. They're chowing down on people amidst a wreckage of several other cars that have suffered the same fate as Vanessa's KIA—though her fate may yet be worse if movies like Critters, The Beastmaster, and other '80s adventure films in this vein are anything to go by. Her companions, Dougie and Kai, have yet to make an appearance here apart from being featured on the cover.

Vanessa thought her life was bad, but it can obviously be worse. Dougie is an orphaned child, which spells trouble from the start. Young kids in stories like this have a tendency to cause more problems than they solve—at least initially. Perhaps Dougie could be a surprising exception. Kai looks like a cross between a bat and a Gremlin with a droopy canine-esque jowl. This creature definitely seems far more approachable than the others that are having dinner down the road. This series is already promising to be action-packed, horrific, and full of the kind of creature chaos the '80s are known for. Humans are fodder, the world as it is known has been breached by a strange alternate world, and there is no safe place in sight. Where are these monsters from and just how massive is this breach? These questions and others—such as whether home or safety can be found again after a long journey—will begin to be answered when this series from Aftershock Comics launchesBeyond the Breach #1 goes on sale July 14, 2021.
