A Beyond Good & Evil movie adaption is being developed at Netflix. Released in 2003 and developed by Ubisoft, Beyond Good & Evil is an action-adventure video game. The story takes place on a planet called Hyllis, where war has continued against invading aliens. The protagonist of the tale is a photojournalist named Jade. Early in the game, she is recruited by a rebel group. Equipped with her staff and camera, Jade fights to uncover the truth of what's happening behind the scenes. Beyond Good & Evil was very well received upon release, but not a big seller. Much to fans' excitement, Ubisoft announced a prequel game in 2017, but sadly, there is still no release date for Beyond Good & Evil 2.

According to THR, Rob Letterman of Detective Pikachu fame is directing the Beyond Good & Evil movie for Netflix. The report states the film is in "early development," and writers are currently being searched for. Jason Altman and Margaret Boykin from Ubisoft Film & Television are producing. Unsurprisingly, the film will reportedly be a hybrid of live-action and animation. Netflix itself also confirmed the film's announcement.

Letterman is arguably a good choice as director. He proved himself capable of handling a video game property with care in Detective Pikachu. Beyond Good & Evil certainly lends itself to a cinematic adaption. There's likable characters, an involved storyline, and action. However, the fact Netflix is using an image of Beyond Good and Evil 2, and not of Jade, suggests the film could be adapting the upcoming prequel game. Netflix calling it a "pirate adventure" strongly indicates this as well, as that description lines up with what's known about Beyond Good and Evil 2's plot. Hopefully, it won't be too long until story details are revealed.
