One of the big attention-grabbing events at the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards ceremony has nothing to do with a scandalous performance or a musician wearing a risque outfit (outside of Lady Gaga’s customary strange garbs). It was the news that Beyoncé Knowles has been pregnant for several months.
That’s good news for the decorated musician, but it means that Warner Bros. will have to shift around its planned production schedule for Clint Eatwood’s A Star Is Born remake – which Beyoncé remains set to headline.
Deadline says that Warner Bros. executives were originally eying a February 2012 start date for principal photography on Eastwood’s musical, with the idea being it would reach theaters by fall/winter of that year. Seeing how Beyoncé remains locked to star in the film, that timeline is simply no longer feasible.
On the plus side, that will allow more time for the studio to find a fitting leading man to star opposite Beyoncé in Eastwood’s next project. Names like Will Smith, Sean Combs, and even Miss Knowle’s Dreamgirls costar, Edie Murphy, were being bandied about as possibilities at some point, but nothing ever came of that. Word leaked out recently that A Star Is Born is among the several projects Christian Bale is eying as his followup to next year’s The Dark Knight Rises, but his involvement is far from a sure thing.
There is one popular leading man who we can officially cross off the list of possibilities: Leonardo DiCaprio. Eastwood discussed A Star Is Born with the actor while the two were working on J. Edgar, but ultimately the man’s busy upcoming schedule (which includes Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained and two Martin Scorsese projects, The Gambler and Wolf of Wall Street) forced him to take a pass.
Warner Bros. shouldn’t be too worried about when A Star Is Born will hit theaters, seeing how Eastwood is well-known for being a highly efficient director; assuming cameras get rolling by sometime in spring 2012, it’s possible the film could still be ready for release by the end of the year. The screenplay by Will Fetters (Remember Me) is all ready to go – and since Eastwood is also known for not messing around with the final draft of a shooting script, he can focus more on completing his addition pre-production duties, while Beyoncé gets to spend time with her newborn child.
We’ll keep you posted on the status of A Star Is Born as more information is released.
