Warning: SPOILERS for Better Call Saul season 6, episode 11, "Breaking Bad"

Walter White and Jesse Pinkman finally returned to the world of Breaking Bad in Better Call Saul, and their appearance was perfect. An appearance by Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul in the Breaking Bad spinoff/prequel was inevitable and has been highly anticipated since their returns were confirmed by the show. Walter and Jesse returned in Better Call Saul season 6, episode 11, appropriately named "Breaking Bad". It's also a nod to how Saul Goodman's first appearance was in Breaking Bad season 2, episode 8, "Better Call Saul".

"Breaking Bad" opens with Saul Goodman hooded and bound in the back of Walt and Jesse's RV in a missing scene from his debut Breaking Bad episode. Having spent six seasons with James McGill/Saul Goodman, there's a brilliant payoff in seeing that infamous Breaking Bad scene from his perspective. It's particularly powerful when Jesse asks Saul about Lalo, highlighting how much he still fears the recriminations of the missing Salamanca cousin. While Walter and Jesse's return may have come at the most obvious point in Saul Goodman's timeline, it works to add layers to the stories of both Better Call Saul and Breaking Bad.

As Better Call Saul is a prequel to Breaking Bad, the returns of Walter and Jesse could have been cheaply deployed to mark the linking up of the timelines. Better Call Saul is a better show than that, however, and resists the temptation to end the series with an episode that shows Walter and Jesse kidnapping Saul. Instead, it deploys the flashback to inform Jimmy's motivations for sliding back into criminality during Better Call Saul's Gene timeline. Better still, the scene with Saul, Walter, and Jesse and the subsequent scene involving Saul and Mike perfectly adds further depth to the story of Breaking Bad, benefitting both shows in the process.

Walt & Jesse In Better Call Saul Improves Breaking Bad

Aaron Paul and Bryan Cranston as Jesse and Walt in Better Call Saul Season 6

As Gene and his new criminal colleagues embark on an identity theft scam, Better Call Saul flashes back to when Saul Goodman first met Walter White and Jesse Pinkman. They're a sharp contrast to Jeff and Buddy, the amateur scammers in Omaha. Saul Goodman sees the potential in Walter and Jesse, his Omaha alter-ego Gene Takavic sees Jeff and Buddy as pliable co-offenders. In flashing back to his first exposure to Walter and Jesse's meth lab, Better Call Saul further justifies its place as a prequel by highlighting how integral Saul Goodman was in Heisenberg's rise to power.

This flashback heavily implies that the Better Call Saul final episodes will focus on how Saul Goodman played a part in connecting Walt and Jesse with Gus Fring. The conversations between Saul, Mike, and Gus took place off-camera during Breaking Bad, but due to the three characters being the focus of Better Call Saul, audiences can see those discussions take place. When he first brings up Walter and Jesse to Mike in the second flashback, Saul is flatly told that Gus has no interest in their amateur drug operation.

As audiences know, that outlook changes, so the question is how Saul changes the minds of Mike and Gus. It's been confirmed that there are two more scenes to come, one with Walter and one with Jesse, so there will be at least two more flashbacks to the Breaking Bad timeline in the final episodes. Bringing back Walter and Jesse in the Better Call Saul final episodes is the perfect way to end the prequel, retelling the story of Breaking Bad from the perspective of the prequel show's protagonist.
