We all have theories about how Better Call Saul will end, but a line from season 6's trailer suggests they're probably wrong. Better Call Saul finds itself in a unique position as the sixth and final season looms. On one hand, Jimmy McGill takes his final step toward becoming Saul Goodman, which means Better Call Saul season 6 must segue neatly into Breaking Bad season 1. Unlike most spinoffs, however, Better Call Saul gets the franchise's final word thanks to the Gene timeline, creating a weird gray area between prequel and sequel.

Naturally, that means fan theories have been in plentiful supply. The prequel timeline is yet to address the fates of Kim Wexler, Nacho Varga and Lalo Salamanca, triggering rampant speculation over where this absent trio may be during Breaking Bad. Then you have the Gene timeline, where most theories revolve around whether Jimmy will find hope and happiness like Jesse Pinkman, or go down in a blaze of glory like Walter White. Kind-of-knowing how the story progresses (thanks to Breaking Bad) whilst also knowing nothing at all has proven perfect theory fuel, but predictably, the Better Call Saul season 6 trailer gives little away.

It does, at least, suggest everyone's theories and predictions heading into Better Call Saul season 6 are completely wrong. One of the trailer's most important lines comes when the voice of Jonathan Banks as Mike Ehrmantraut utters, "Whatever happens next, it’s not gonna go down the way you think it is." The Better Call Saul season 6 trailer doesn't show who Mike is threatening here, but that's not why the line features in the trailer. Rather than hyping an upcoming scene, Mike's warning is intended as a message directly from Vince Gilligan and Peter Gould (executive producers) to their audience - Better Call Saul's final season isn't going to play out the way viewers have been predicting.

A similar marketing technique was used in the trailer for Star Wars: The Last Jedi, with Mark Hamill's returning Luke Skywalker dropping the line, "This is not going to go the way you think." Luke was really speaking to Rey but, once again, for the trailer's purposes, Rian Johnson (who, incidentally, was a director for Breaking Bad) and Disney are directly addressing fans. The Last Jedi wasn't lying, and completely subverted Star Wars expectations. Does Better Call Saul's trailer also signal major, unpredictable twists ahead - the likes of which will blow fan theories completely out of the water? Even the (deliberately secretive) trailer reveals surprises few anticipated, such as Lalo getting a body double, and Spooge's first appearance since Breaking Bad season 2. Undoubtedly, the full Better Call Saul season 6 has even greater shocks in store.

The Better Call Saul season 6 trailer's "expect the unexpected" warning fits what we've been hearing from cast and crew over the past two years. Actors have promised Better Call Saul's finale is the best yet, mind-blowing, "devastating," and "out of control." If we assume these comments aren't just promotional patter, season 6 certainly seems primed to move in ways no Better Call Saul theorists could've predicted.

Some may interpret Mike's Better Call Saul trailer warning as a bad omen - especially given the extreme fan division that followed The Last Jedi. Rian Johnson's Star Wars sequel certainly did not go how most folks expected, and they still won't let the director forget it. Fortunately, Gilligan and Gould have never given reason to doubt, following up the iconic Breaking Bad with a spinoff that, when all is said and done, might be better than its predecessor. Even if what happens next doesn't go down the way we think it is, Better Call Saul earned our trust a long time ago.
