Rhea Seehorn says she doesn’t know yet if Kim Wexler dies in the final season of Better Call Saul. Seehorn’s Wexler debuted as Jimmy McGill’s love interest in season 1 of AMC’s acclaimed Breaking Bad spinoff and has evolved over the years into a complex and interesting character in her own right.

Season 5 of Better Call Saul indeed saw Kim evolving further than ever as the character began showing dimensions even her long-term lover Jimmy didn’t know about. By the end of season 5, audiences were asked to wonder if the Kim they thought they knew was even real, or as much of a façade as Jimmy’s own Saul Goodman persona. Season 6 will no doubt answer a lot of questions about Kim’s real nature, but the bigger question is whether the character will even survive the events of the show’s final season. Such questions about Kim’s ultimate fate of course occur naturally as fans already know she is not present for the action in Breaking Bad, which takes place after the events of Better Call Saul.

If seeking an answer as to Kim’s fate before Better Call Saul season 6 airs, don’t bother asking the actress who plays her, as Seehorn herself says she's still in the dark. Speaking to The Daily Beast, Seehorn offered up no spoilers when discussing what will befall her character. And she insisted that her still being at work on the show shouldn't be taken as a clue about Kim's role in season 6:

We have to be careful about even me saying that I’m in New Mexico, because people don’t know, does Kim survive? What happens to Kim? And by the way, I don’t know. And just so you know, we have reshoots and we took a little pause after Bob’s heart attack. So even me being here now doesn’t actually tell you much about what happens to me or how many episodes I’m in. Because they jump back and forth in time. They do it all the time. That being said, I don’t actually know what happens to my character yet.

Kim Wexler in Better Call Saul

It’s no surprise that everyone involved with Better Call Saul is playing things close to the vest when it comes to the events of season 6. There have however been a few vague teasers, such as executive producer Thomas Schnauz saying the new season contains “more physical and emotional violence” than previous seasons. That certainly doesn’t bode well for anyone on the show, including Kim. Of course even Jimmy isn’t out of the woods, as Better Call Saul features scenes that flash-forward beyond the events of Breaking Bad, possibly indicating that Jimmy ends up being killed himself.

Of course Better Call Saul creators Vince Gilligan and Peter Gould have no qualms whatsoever about killing any character at any time, as they proved on Breaking Bad, whose last season saw main character Walter White and major supporting characters Hank Schrader and Steve Gomez all dying. That fact alone means fans of Kim Wexler should be very nervous about what happens to her. The hope of course is that if Kim does die, it feels like a meaningful and necessary moment, and not something that happens just for gratuitous shock effect. Thankfully, Gilligan and Gould’s history demonstrates they know how and when to take out a character, and know how to handle such deaths for maximum emotional effect.

No matter what is set to happen in Better Call Saul season 6, there is great reason to be optimistic that the season will deliver as a fitting finale to the series. This is after all the same team that delivered Breaking Bad, a show that stuck the landing harder than almost any in history. And while there may be lot of uncertainty about the fate of characters like Kim Wexler, it is certain is that Better Call Saul will take all sorts of twists and turns that no one saw coming before it finally wraps up its story. Better Call Saul season 6 is set to arrive on AMC in early 2022.
