Better Call Saul season 6 is supposed to start production in September, according to star Michael Mando. Back in January, roughly one month before season 5 premiered, AMC officially renewed Better Call Saul for a sixth and final season. In the time since that announcement, Better Call Saul had arguably its best season yet, earning widespread acclaim (the "Bagman" episode was seen as a major highlight). Season 5 ended with a pair of exciting plot twists that set the stage for the show's final run, leaving fans wondering what will happen next.

While Better Call Saul season 6 is definitely happening, it's unknown when it will see the light of day. As most people know, the coronavirus pandemic forced the entertainment industry to shut down, delaying release dates and filming schedules until it's deemed safe to resume normal business operations. The Better Call Saul season 6 writers room is able to meet virtually to discuss the season, but it remains to be seen if production will be postponed. However, we now know when the team was hoping to start rolling the cameras.

In an interview with Screen Rant, we asked Mando about how Better Call Saul season 6 is affected by the ongoing health crisis. The actor revealed the season is slated to begin filming this fall:

I know they’re writing right now, as we speak. I know they’re writing remotely, from a distance, and they’re doing conference calls through Skype and such. But I don’t know if the schedule is affected.

I know we were supposed to start in September; I just don’t know if that’s pushed or not. You’d have to ask Peter [Gould] and Vince [Gilligan].

At one point, it was said the earliest delayed productions could resume is mid-May, but that window is increasingly becoming too optimistic. Instead, studios appear to be banking on late summer/early fall for when things will get back to something resembling normalcy. Warner Bros. is eyeing to start Black Adam production in August or September, and Sony hasn't delayed Spider-Man: Homecoming 3 (which is supposed to start filming in July). Considering all that pans out and those movies are able to stick to their schedules, then it's possible Better Call Saul season 6 can commence principal photography in September and not miss a beat. That conceivably would put the show on track for a return in 2021.

Unfortunately, there's no guarantee things will be better come August and September. The coronavirus pandemic is a very fluid situation, making it difficult to predict how things will look a couple of weeks from now, let alone several months. It will be great if Better Call Saul can follow its original plan, but for now there remains the possibility season 6 could get delayed. That would be frustrating for fans, especially given how season 5 ended, but most would understand. As badly as people want to know what happens next on Better Call Saul, keeping everyone safe and healthy is most important.
