Jimmy McGill and Kim Wexler have plenty of problems in Better Call Saul season 6; now they can add a Breaking Bad universe paradox to that list. The final season of Saul Goodman's Breaking Bad spinoff is currently on a nerve-wracking break before the very last batch of episodes air. Better Call Saul's mid-season finale ended on the most shocking note possible when Jimmy & Kim's confrontation with Howard Hamlin got interrupted by a wild, gun-toting Lalo Salamanca. The cartel gangster ruthlessly put a bullet through Howard's brain, and Better Call Saul just as ruthlessly rolled credits seconds after his lifeless body hit the ground.

Audiences have since been left to contemplate a Howard-free Better Call Saul, but even though Patrick Fabian's character won't appear in season 6, part 2, some new faces are joining the finale fun. The most significant name announced so far is Carol Burnett, iconic comedian and actress best known for The Carol Burnett Show which ran throughout the 1960s and 1970s. Burnett first expressed admiration for Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul in a 2018 Jimmy Kimmel interview, and has now been cast as "Marion" ahead of season 6's second half.

Burnett's presence in Better Call Saul threatens to rip the time-space continuum of Jimmy McGill's universe apart. Way back in Better Call Saul season 2's "Rebecca," a flashback scene showed Jimmy visiting his older brother Chuck's house for dinner (in the days before he became an electricity-averse recluse, of course). Before Jimmy arrives, Chuck and his wife discuss a "signal" to get rid of Jimmy should the evening turn sour, and Chuck suggests, "How about the old Carol Burnett thing?" in reference to her earlobe gag. This line creates the curious scenario whereby an actress within the Breaking Bad universe has been referenced by the Breaking Bad universe. That's like Jimmy saying, "Hey, remember the dad from Malcolm in the Middle?" or Howard Hamlin asking Chuck if he ever heard of Spinal Tap.

Better Call Saul hasn't yet provided any firm details on who Carol Burnett's Marion actually is, nor how she connects to season 6's narrative. Nevertheless, it'll be fascinating to see whether Better Call Saul drops any kind of acknowledgement that Marion's actress is confirmed to exist within Breaking Bad's universe. Maybe Jimmy claims to recognize Marion but can't quite place where from, or perhaps Marion subtly performs her earlobe routine in reference to Chuck's "Carol Burnett" scene from Better Call Saul season 2. Through make-up and costume trickery, Better Call Saul might deliberately make Marion look nothing like her actress, avoiding a Carol Burnett-shaped plot hole altogether. Given the uncanny meta connection between fiction and real life here, Better Call Saul would be ignoring the elephant in the room by not at least acknowledging Burnett's status as established Breaking Bad canon.

Any Easter eggs or subtle nods would, however, depend on Marion's role in Better Call Saul season 6. At the ripe age of 89, Burnett might portray one of the colorful Sandpiper residents who just landed a huge chunk of compensation thanks to Jimmy and Kim. Alternatively, she could be playing a main character's parent. Jimmy's mother is called Ruth (and also is dead), while Kim's mother is too young. More likely, Carol Burnett's Marion could be Howard Hamlin's mother, making a cameo appearance at his funeral. We know Howard's father, George Hamlin, died pre-Better Call Saul, but his mother remains a mystery. Maybe Jimmy and Kim attend Howard's funeral and watch his mother weep as they awkwardly sit through the service knowing the real reason her son died. Carol Burnett brings the perfect blend of natural charm and comedy to turn the screw of guilt into Jimmy McGill and Kim Wexler.
