Better Call Saul's "Bagman" episode hints Kim Wexler may have worked with Jesse Pinkman's family in the past. One of the many reasons why the spinoff has been able to stand on its own and emerge from Breaking Bad's shadow is it avoids the low-hanging fruit that plagues many pop culture prequels. Five seasons in, Walter White or Jesse have not appeared on Better Call Saul, with the focus being on Jimmy McGill's transformation into Saul Goodman. However, while Saul's most famous clients haven't shown up in the flesh, the show might have found ways to subtly reference them.

Though Better Call Saul star Bob Odenkirk believes Jesse will have to be on the spinoff soon (maybe in the upcoming sixth season?), right now any potential references to Jesse come in the form of thinly-veiled Easter eggs. These include theories he's Krazy-8's new dealer mentioned in season 3 and a possible callback to Breaking Bad's "Fly" episode this season. And in the latest episode, Better Call Saul continued its trend of (supposedly) referencing Jesse in an understated manner.

Early on in this week's "Bagman," Jimmy has to tell Kim about his task to pick up Lalo Salamanca's bail money. To set up the situation, Jimmy recalls a case Kim dealt with earlier in her legal career:

"Remember that time you had a PD case with the kid whose parents kicked him out because he got caught with a joint?... And you had to drive all the way out to the uncle's house - I think it was in Moriarty - to pick up the bail?"

Aaron Paul as Jesse Pinkman in Breaking Bad

The situation (a kid being kicked out of the house due to drug use) is reminiscent of Jesse's dynamic with his parents as established in the first seasons of Breaking Bad. So while the Better Call Saul anecdote is short on details, it's certainly possible Jesse is "the kid" Jimmy mentions here. This is exactly the kind of clever Easter egg Vince Gilligan and company would include in Better Call Saul; it doesn't distract viewers in the moment with blatant fan service, but still excites longtime fans who are clued in. Of course, nothing about Jesse's uncle(s) (including if he has any in the first place) is known at this point in time, but that doesn't mean he couldn't have a relative who lives in Moriarty fans are unaware of.

The Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul teams are renowned for their sharp attention to detail. There isn't a lot of filler on the shows (Better Call Saul's season 5's plot is based around a "throwaway" line of Breaking Bad dialogue from years ago) and things are usually included for specific reasons. That's why fans are convinced Kim's mysteriously missing middle name is going to factor into Lalo's case. It's true "the kid" could just be a random junkie, but this feels like a rather specific nod to the franchise's past. As things stand right now, there really isn't a place for Jesse himself in the Better Call Saul story, so Easter eggs like this are the next best thing.
