WARNING: This article contains SPOILERS for Better Call Saul season 6.

Kim Wexler's return could be the downfall of Gene Takavic if one sad Better Call Saul season 6 theory turns out to be true. Kim and Jimmy did not part ways on the best of terms, and her return in the final episodes has been a major talking point amongst viewers. Unfortunately, the events of the last few episodes have seen Gene spiral into schemes that could spell doom for him. Tragically, this may also mean Kim's return will be instrumental in his downfall.

Better Call Saul season 6's "Fun and Games" is the final episode of the main prequel storyline following Jimmy McGill's transformation into Saul Goodman. It sees the complete deterioration of his marriage with Better Call Saul's Kim after the guilt over Howard Hamlin's death takes over her. The following two episodes follow Gene's storyline, where he engages in more elaborate schemes with Jeff and his friend, Buddy. It's here where his spiral into true danger begins, and begins to spell out how Kim could factor into it.

In the Better Call Saul season 6 episode "Breaking Bad", Gene has Buddy and Jeff help him drug several men unconscious, break into their homes, and steal their identification and financial information for profit. The scheme takes a grim turn when the latest target reveals he has cancer, prompting Gene to do it himself after firing Buddy when he backs out. Because of the particularly heinous nature of the scheme, a potential Kim return could be bad news for Better Call Saul's Gene once she discovers what he has done. This is even more true should his breaking into the house alert the authorities.

How Kim Could Play A Part In Gene's Downfall In Better Call Saul

Gene in Better Call Saul season 6

While she hasn't made a physical appearance yet in Better Call Saul season 6's Gene episodes, Kim may have already played a part in his downfall. This is apparent through the phone call Gene makes to her, where he ends up smashing the phone after a heated discussion. Whether he was talking to Kim or not, this is what leads to him resuming the conning schemes after a brief retirement following the mall theft. If anything, her return could only serve to make things worse.

As previously mentioned, Kim's guilt over Howard Hamlin's death in Better Call Saul season 6 is what leads her to leave Jimmy. This proves that her moral compass still remains intact in spite of her part in the scheme that damages Howard's reputation. Once she realizes that Jimmy is still engaging in cons, she may want to put a stop to his antics for good. Should Gene get arrested, this could also mean that Saul Goodman is put away as well.

When Kim and Jimmy got married in Better Call Saul season 5, it allowed them to keep from testifying against each other in court. Now that they are no longer together and Saul is wanted by the DEA, Kim may wish to absolve herself of her guilt by testifying against Gene should he get caught by the police. During said testimony, she could reveal her part in the other schemes she and Jimmy partake in, such as their Howard plan in Better Call Saul season 6. It may permanently damage both her reputation and relationship with Jimmy entirely, but it could also be what she needs to achieve redemption.

Why Kim's Return Not Being A Happy Ending Makes Sense For Better Call Saul

Ultimately, Kim and Gene's reunion in Better Call Saul season 6 not being a happy ending is the only one that fits given the trajectory of the story. The show has always been about Jimmy's descent into becoming Saul Goodman, and season 6 adds to this by having not only having up to no good again as Gene, but being worse than ever doing so. His willingness to break into a dying man's home and rob him blind proves that redemption may not be possible for Jimmy. If Kim has spent the last several years trying to be a better person while Jimmy became further embroiled in criminal activity, it wouldn't make sense for Kim's reunion with Gene to see her welcome him back into her life with open arms.

For now, there is no telling what could happen if and when Kim returns in the final episodes of Better Call Saul season 6'. What seems guaranteed, though, is that Gene's story is not going to have a happy ending. After all, nearly every story in Better Call Saul (from Nacho's to Howard's) has ended in tragedy. It only makes sense for the show's core relationship to end in an emotionally devastating way as well.
