Video games are an amazing medium to portray worlds beyond our wildest imagination. From sci-fi planets to fantasy kingdoms, there is nothing that cannot be done. Sometimes though, it is not the fantastical that draws the attention. Sometimes it is the simple allure of a place called home.

From Lara Croft and her iconic Croft Manor (which has grown and expanded over the years along with its heroine) to the upcycled barrels of Cranky Kong, video game characters clearly want the chance to lay their heads down at the end of a long day just as much as anyone. Perhaps even more so; after all, more often than not gaming heroes go for more than a few days slaying enemies and saving the world without so much as a strong cup of coffee to keep them awake and energized.

Sometimes, however, the homes these valiant characters return to are really quite subpar and not worthy of a hero. Here are some of video games' houses and homes that many would love to live in, and those that, quite honestly, would not be worth the rent.

Best Game Houses & Homes - Croft Manor (Tomb Raider II)

Croft Manor in Tomb Raider 2

In Tomb Raider II, gamers get an in-depth tour of Lady Lara Croft’s exquisite abode. Used as a training level, it is at the manor that players learn the game’s mechanics, including how to jump, flip and climb their way around.

This Tomb Raider house is kitted out for any adventurer’s whim. An obstacle course (complete with zip line), a winding maze, and an indoor swimming pool are just some of the incredible features. Throw in an epic sound system and the ability to lock the creepy butler in the freezer (Sorry Winston!) and players are definitely living in a winner.

Best Game Houses & Homes - Nate & Elena’s Beach House (Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End)

Nathan Drake and Elena Fisher Beach House Uncharted 4

Seen for one time only in the whole of the Uncharted series, this beachside property will leave a lasting impression on the player. It is here that players say farewell to Uncharted’s roguish hero Nathan Drake and his family, in a chapter simply entitled "Epilogue."

Stuffed to the gunnels with knick-knacks and treasures, gamers could spend forever just taking it all in. The house is flooded in natural light, and the Drake’s furnishings make the most of organic fibers and patterns. The entire property reflects the couple’s globetrotting tendencies. Maps, charts, and expedition photos are scattered throughout the home, which is delightfully cluttered. It is apparent that many great memories have been made here, and there are hints of many more still to come.

Best Game Houses & Homes - Avengers Mansion (LEGO: Marvel Super Heroes 2)

The Avengers Mansion acts as the central hub for the LEGO Marvel Super Heroes 2 game. It is here that players can see their achievements, search for missions, and generally take stock. Located in Manhattan, this sprawling property is chock-full of gadgets and gizmos.

It is the perfect location for a band of superheroes to come together to organize their next valiant deeds. While maybe lacking in the usual home amenities (such as a kitchen) it is by no means any less covetable for it. From the multitude of bookcases to the chaise longue by the fire, this place oozes class and calm – a nice juxtaposition to the chaos in the rest of Marvel’s Manhattan.

Best Game Houses & Homes - Ophelia Villa (The Sims 4)

The Sims 4 Ophelia Villa

The Goth House has always been a staple of The Sims. It is as iconic as spamming the money cheat code as soon as entering a new lot. Bella and Mortimer Goth have moved with The Sims players through platforms and generations since the start of the millennium.

In The Sims 4, the Goth family resides in Ophelia Villa. It is everything players would expect from gamers’ favorite macabre family. A suit of armor adorns the hallway, candelabrum festoon the rooms, and their master bedroom is, of course, swathed in sumptuous red. To top it all off, the Goth’s have a music room (complete with a grand piano and $15,000 violin) and an attic bedroom with 360 views. The Goth’s can always be counted on to bring some drama and mystery to their interior design, and Ophelia Villa is no exception.

Worst Game Houses & Homes - Croft Manor (Rise of the Tomb Raider: Blood Ties)

Croft Manor Rise of the Tomb Raider Blood Ties DLC

At the start of the Rise of the Tomb Raider: Blood Ties DLC, Lara receives a notice stating the termination of her ownership of Croft Manor. At first glance, this house has so much potential; impressive woodwork, beautiful big windows, and comfortable furnishings. It is clear to see why Lara wants to prove her mother’s death and keep hold of it for herself.

On venturing further in though, the true extent of the manor’s dilapidation is revealed. Rainwater leaks through the ceilings, “No Entry” and “Danger” signs block players paths, and wind blows through the multitude of windows that have been broken by fallen trees. With the amount of work that needs done, it is a wonder that Lara does not immediately relinquish her ownership over to her Uncle Atlas and let him deal with the renovations. He is doing anything he can to obtain it anyway.

Worst Game Houses & Homes - Luigi’s Mansion (Luigi’s Mansion)

A screenshot from the GameCube game Luigi's Manison.

After ‘winning a competition’ that he cannot remember even entering, the famous green-hatted plumber Luigi moves into his own mansion in the aptly titled Nintendo game, Luigi’s Mansion. It all sounds great on paper, but as with many things in life, not everything is as it seems.

With bare trees, suspicious crows, and more dust than a termite would know what do with, it is a surprise that Luigi does not turn back from Luigi's Mansion immediately. However, onward he goes, only to discover Professor E. Gadd and a houseful of ghostly spirits. Even for free, this house seems like a lot more effort than it is worth.

Worst Game Houses & Homes - Cranky’s Cabin (Donkey Kong Country)

Crankys Cabin Donkey Kong Country

They say a man’s house is his castle. However, it seems that poor Cranky Kong must be living in the outhouse. In Donkey Kong Country, players can find the patriarch of the Kong family sitting outside his cabin in the jungle in a foul mood, and although it's probably his general attitude towards life it also may be influenced by his poorly-kept furnishings.

Made from bits of scrap metal and an old barrel, it is hard to see how this structure is still standing. A single light breeze could be enough to flatten the whole thing. Other than "rickety," "cramped" is another word that springs to mind when seeing this cabin; Donkey Kong’s girth alone does not look like it would fit through the doorway carved into the exterior. Given his living situation, it is no wonder Cranky Kong is cranky.

Worst Game Houses & Homes - The Gillespie House (Silent Hill: Origins)

A man carries a dead body from a burning house in Silent Hill Origins

Home of Dahlia and Alessa Gillespie, this house appears in the opening scenes of Silent Hill: Origins. Protagonist Travis Grady runs into the house after seeing it ablaze and proceeds to rescue Alessa from being burnt alive.

Ignoring the flames, which is admittedly quite hard to do, this house’s biggest failing is that it is so incredibly bland. The rooms are all the same, monotonous brown from top to bottom. Brown floors, brown walls, brown ceiling. If that does not put someone off, the fact that it is also downright creepy will certainly send anyone running for the (little less silent) hills.
