The romantic comedy has been a staple in Hollywood for decades now. Though it don't always have the biggest box office earnings and it doesn't spawn massive franchises like Harry Potter, but it is a beloved part of the Hollywood landscape. After all, nothing is more magical than watching two people defy the odds and fall in love.

While the 2010s were dominated by busy superhero films from Marvel and the resurrection of the Star Wars franchise, rom-coms weren't at the forefront of moviegoers' minds and yet they were still made.

Best: Crazy Rich Asians (2018)

The genre saw an East Asian-only cast experiencing complicated love and lavish lifestyles on the big screen with Crazy Rich Asians. Based on the Kevin Kwan novel of the same name, Crazy Rich Asians stars Constance Wu (Fresh Off the Boat) and Henry Golding as the "it" couple who find love despite their different family backgrounds.

Crazy Rich Asians broke more records than anyone thought possible, thus becoming the highest-grossing romantic comedy of the 2010s with a box office of $238 million. With a budget of $30 million, there's no doubt that the film was a critical and financial success.

Worst: The Kissing Booth (2018)

While 2018 produced one of the biggest romantic comedies of all time, it also produced one of the cheesiest romantic comedies of all time: The Kissing BoothBased on the young adult novel by Beth Reekles, The Kissing Booth follows Elle, a high schooler, who has a crush on her best friend's older brother.

Released on Netflix in 2018 the film was widely viewed; however, many were quick to criticize the story for borrowing too many tropes from the genre and for perpetuating a misogynistic message. Despite this, the film has since spawned a sequel with a third on the way.

Best: The Big Sick (2017)

With a measly $5-million budget, no one excepted The Big Sick to become as big as it did, bringing in an estimated $56.4 million at the box office. Loosely inspired by Kumail Nanjiani and Emily V. Gordon's real-life love story, the film follows this couple as they fall in love despite all the obstacles that stand in their way.

The independent film first premiered at Sundance Film Festival before being released in theaters where it went on to become one of the highest-grossing independent films of the year. The Big Sick also earned Nanjiani and Gordon an Oscar nomination for Best Original Screenplay.

Worst: Sex And The City 2 (2010)

Sex and the City might be hailed as one of the best television drama series of all time; unfortunately, that praise did not translate over to the series's second film. Sex and the City 2 followed the original cast as they take one last girls trip to Abu Dhabi.

Though Sex and the City 2 did earn a profit at the box office, that didn't stop critics and fans from airing their grievances on the Internet. In fact, the film currently boasts a 16% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and an even more depressing 4.5 on IMDb.

Best: To All The Boys I've Loved Before (2018)

Much like movies for adults, movies marketed for teens took on an action-packed, dystopian style during the 2010s with the rise of The Hunger Games and DivergentThanks to Netflix, though, that began to change around the time when To All The Boys I've Loved Before was released. Adapted from Jenny Han's best selling novel, the film centers around Lara Jean (Lana Condor), who is dealing with the aftermath of her love letters getting sent to their recipients.

Much like the novel, the To All The Boys I've Loved Before film was well received amongst fans and has been credited for reigniting the teen rom-com spark, specifically at Netflix.

Worst: Aloha (2015)

Directed and written by romantic comedy legend Cameron Crowe, Aloha failed to find its footing with audiences and ended up making $26.3 million against a $37-52-million budget. The film follows Brian Gilcrest as he attempts to reconnect with his old girlfriend while also falling for his coworker.  Not even the stars A-list cast which included Bradley Cooper, Rachel McAdams, John Krasinski, and Emma Stone could save it from its doomed fate.

Not only did the film commercially fail, but it was also met with criticism due to its whitewashing of the cast.

Best: Easy A (2010)

One of the biggest hits of 2010 came in the form of the teen romantic comedy Easy AThe film, which is considered to be Emma Stone's breakout role, follows Olive, a teenage girl, who makes a business out of letting the unpopular boys at their high school claim they've hooked up with her.

Easy A was a financial success grossing $75 million on a measly $8-million budget. In addition, it's been hailed as the '80s romantic comedy of the 2010s, borrowing the best tropes from all the best '80s rom-coms.

Worst: Sierra Burgess Is A Loser (2018)

After the success of To All The Boys I've Loved Before, Noah Centineo became Netflix's romantic comedy king. Unfortunately, not even Centineo could save the Netflix original film Sierra Burgess Is A Loser from its ill-received fate. The film follows Sierra (Shannon Purser from Stranger Things) as she catfishes Jamey (Centineo) into falling in love with her.

While Purser and Centineo are both solid actors, fans of both them and rom-coms couldn't get over the problematic plot of the film. Over the course of the film, Sierra catfishes Jamey, has a non-consensual kiss with him, and even partakes in cyberbullying.

Best: Love, Simon (2018)

In addition, to diversifying race and ethnicity, the 2018 romantic comedy genre also diversified who could fall in love when the teen romantic comedy Love, Simon hit theaters. Based on the best-selling novel by Becky Albertalli, Love, Simon follows Simon Spier as he tries to understand and accept his sexuality.

Love, Simon was a commercial success, but, more importantly, it's credited as being the first major Hollywood studio film to feature gay teenagers in love. The film has been so successful it even spawned its own Hulu television series with a new cast: Love, Victor.

Worst: My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 (2016)

The original My Big Fat Greek Wedding is a romantic comedy legend that continues to be the highest-grossing romantic comedy of all time. And yet, the much-anticipated sequel was not so lucky with audiences and critics alike. My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 centers itself around Toula and Ian as they struggle to raise their rebellious teenage daughter.

While the film did turn a profit at the box office, it was nowhere near close to breaking the records its predecessor had. In addition, many critics found the film to be too gimmicky.
