Since its debut back in 2005, Supernatural has been the source of inspiration for fan-fiction writers all over the world. Over at Archive of Our Own, there are currently over 239,000 entries for the TV show about everyone's favorite paranormal hunting brothers. It could take a reader months, if not years, to comb through all the stories available on the website.
But whether or not a fan is looking for fanfic that gives some minor character their own more detailed back story, or fanfic that explores their favorite Supernatural relationship (canon or otherwise), there is plenty for them to choose.

Castiel is a shy, awkward high school student, and Dean is the new kid in town. A lot of characters, including Bobby and Zachariah, serve as teachers. The story touches on some heavier themes such as homophobia, but the overall story is a delight to read.
Hail Mary
Hail Mary, written by galaxysoup, is a great AU teaming up a reincarnated Mary Winchester and Castiel after the events of season 9, episode 3, "I'm No Angel." Castiel, now human, on the run from heaven, serves as Mary's wingman while she does her own hunting.
Both of them are struggling with their own demons, both literally and figuratively. It's a fun story that allows two characters a chance to interact in a way that fans didn't get to see on the show.
Building A Memory
Building A Memory, written by Tennyo, centers around Dean Winchester waking up without any memory of his life up until that point. He doesn't remember Sam, Castiel, or the hunting; nothing about his life is there in his head.
Dean now has a chance to build a new life for himself away from the dark world he and Sam dealt with daily or find a way to regain the memories that he has lost.
Love Languages
A huge point of contention within the Supernatural fandom was that in the episode, "Inherit The Earth," Castiel finally said "I love you" to Dean Winchester just before being taken by The Empty. Dean did not say it in return.
Love Languages, written by tiamatv, is a sweet "fix it" fanfic for that episode, bringing Cas back to life as Dean realizes he may have feelings for him after all.
Offering
Offering, written by TheRiverScribe, is the first in their By The Grace of God series, and it's a sad but sweet short story between Sam Winchester and Chuck.
Sam wakes up from his time in the cage post-season 11 finale to find that he's in the bunker with Chuck, but with Dean believed to be dead and Castiel banished, Sam thinks he's alone. Chuck offers Sam a chance to not just physically heal from his time in the cage but to mentally heal as well.
Defect
Defect, written by kikkimax, is a fun crossover with the television show Criminal Minds. Dean Winchester's checkered past catches up to him and the FBI picks him up. Meanwhile, Sam Winchester races against the clock to save his brother from being sent to hell.
The Criminal Minds team is also featured as they interrogate Dean trying to figure out if the stories he's telling about demons, vampires, werewolves, etc., are actually true.
Mission
Mission, written by Wingsandcoffee, is an alternative reality Supernatural fanfic where Castiel becomes human to help both him and Dean escape purgatory to find themselves back in 1991.
Dean Winchester decides he will do all that he can to give the younger version of him and his brother Sam a better life than he did. Convincing John Winchester to allow him to take care of the boys, both Dean and Cas do their best to help give the Winchesters the good life they deserve.
A Moment Like Forever
A Moment Like Forever, written by RiatheMai, is a fanfic where Dean finds himself a de-aged version of his baby brother Sam.
Seeking help from Jody Mills and Bobby Singer, the trio do their best to help take care of an infant version of Sam while racing against the clock to bring him back to normal.
Secret Weapon, Secret Family
Secret Weapon, Secret Family, written by RhymePhile, is a great alternative take about how the angels try to make Dean Winchester agree to become the vessel for the archangel Michael.
After realizing that his brother Zachariah's idea to get Dean to agree would never work, Michael decides to take a different approach in getting the Winchester brother to say yes to becoming his vessel.
If Angels Were Men
If Angels Were Men, written by manifestingwings, is an alternative universe fanfic where human Castiel Novak is raised by a father who hunts the paranormal. While away at school, Castiel finds out that his father was murdered, forcing him into the life he had worked so hard to stay away from.
As a hunter, he keeps running into two brothers who are also hunters, Dean and Sam Winchester. As the story develops, the trio becomes friends, then teammates, and in regards to Dean Winchester, perhaps something more.
