For the most part, video games getting adapted into movies has been a mixed bag at best. There are times when it seems like the studios trying to capitalize on the game's popularity don't know much about it and it shows with an unfaithful version coming to the big screen.

Every once in a while though, a video game movie turns out to be pretty good. It's either enjoyable on its own or, at the very least, it's true to the game it's based on. The users at Letterboxd have left their reviews and can pinpoint which of these films are the best.

Mortal Kombat (2.6)

Interestingly enough, both versions of Mortal Kombat are tied with the same average rating. The brand new 2021 iteration just misses out since it has a lower percentage of scores over three stars. The original 1995 version received three-star ratings 26% of the time to 2021's 25%.

Maybe part of what makes the 1995 version so beloved is that it includes an actual tournament where the fighters do battle. The special effects might not hold up over two decades later but for most longtime fans, there's a campiness to this movie that makes it a blast to sit through.

The Angry Birds Movie 2 (2.7)

There are some games that feel perfect for a movie adaptation and some that seem they wouldn't translate well at all. Angry Birds is one that felt meant to fail but the first film was decent. 2019's sequel, The Angry Birds Movie 2, turned out to be much better and holds the best rating of any video game movie on Rotten Tomatoes.

The animated picture went an interesting route by making the birds and pigs team up when a weapon threatened both of their homes. Most of the reviews on Letterboxd gave it three stars (26%) and a surprising 3% of users actually gave it the full five stars.

Tomb Raider (2.8)

The Angelina Jolie-led Tomb Raider movies did well at the box office but were met with mixed reviews at best. In 2018, the film was rebooted with Tomb Raider, taking plenty of inspiration from the newer games and the survival element that it was centered around.

One thing that made this version better was the casting of Alicia Vikander, a talented actor with an Oscar to her name. Her portrayal of Lara Croft was a strong one and helped this movie rack up a solid average, with 31% of users considering it to be a three-star film.

Resident Evil (2.9)

In terms of box office success, no video game to movie franchise can touch Resident Evil. After multiple installments, it surpassed $1 billion total but it all had to start somewhere. That was in 2002 with the aptly titled Resident Evil, which remains the best reviewed of the bunch.

The plot followed Alice and a group of commandos from the Umbrella Corporation in their quest to prevent the T-virus from spreading. Though not totally faithful to the game, the action aspects were praised. Three stars is the most common rating (29%), with two and a half and three and a half following (14%).

Sonic The Hedgehog (2.9)

Sonic The Hedgehog

Given the history of video game flicks and the first trailer, 2020's Sonic the Hedgehog felt like it would be a misfire. Audiences disliked the look of the titular character so much that the filmmakers went back and changed it before release. Thankfully, the finished product proved to be a hit.

Sonic teamed with a human friend to take down the evil Dr. Robotnik in a film that was seen as simply being a lot of fun. It also left a cool tease for the introduction of Tails in a potential sequel. Three stars was again the rating given out more often (30%) than any other.

Silent Hill (3.0)

Along with Resident Evil, the most famous survival horror video gaming series is Silent Hill. It felt like one that would work extremely well on the big screen, though it didn't stick the landing. The 2006 film was met with a mixed reception from both critics and audience members.

The story closely followed aspects from the original game, which made fans of it happy enough. The scares themselves were there, though some characters like Pyramid Head were seen as underused. Still, it did well enough for three stars (28%) to be a common score for it.

Pokémon Detective Pikachu (3.1)

The popularity of the Pokémon franchise is one that has gone through a lot over the years. It was red hot in the late '90s and early '00s before somewhat tapering off. It then picked back up in a major way during the 2010s, leading to the eventual release of Pokémon Detective Pikachu.

Instead of focusing on the adventures of those who hope to "catch 'em all," this 2019 film was a mystery tale with Pikachu (voiced by Ryan Reynolds) helping to solve the case. Three stars (31%) and three and a half stars (21%) are the ratings given out to this film more than any other.

Street Fighter II: The Animated Movie (3.3)

The 1994 live-action Street Fighter was widely seen as a flop in terms of quality. However, that same year an anime film was released titled Street Fighter II: The Animated Movie, which was meant to be an adaptation of the second installment in the fighting game series.

To this day, it still holds up as one of the better received gaming movies ever made. The plot itself was pretty straightforward but it was praised for the faithful characters, the animation style, and the fighting scenes. Most reviews have it at three stars (30%) but a fair number have it at four stars (18%).

Pokémon: The First Movie - Mewtwo Strikes Back (3.3)

Mewtwo in Pokemon The First Movie

At the height of the late '90s Pokémon craze came the first feature-length film hitting theaters in 1998. Pokémon: The First Movie - Mewtwo Strikes Back was a hit from a commercial standpoint and did quite well critically as well.

The plot centered on the much-hyped debut of Mewtwo, a powerful Pokémon created from the DNA of the rarest Pokémon. It all culminated with a huge showdown that audiences loved at the end of the film. Again, three stars (27%) is the most common score but it does have a perfect five star score 9% of the time.

Mortal Kombat: Scorpion's Revenge (3.4)

In between the release of the '90s films and the 2021 reboot, there was Mortal Kombat: Scorpion's Revenge. Released in 2020, this animated flick was the most faithful adaptation of the game, helped along by the fact that not going the live-action route meant it could be as gory as it needed to be.

With a focus on Scorpion returning from hell to get vengeance against Sub-Zero for killing his family, the film also saw an actual Mortal Kombat tournament with some memorable fights. Three and a half stars is the most consistent rating (30%) as it has lots of violence and just the right amount of lore.
