Revealed last week, there will be a world championship for Tetris Effect: Connected in October that will see it in conjunction with the Classic Tetris World Championships happening at the same time. And with games like Tetris 99 receiving continued support through new themes to unlock by competing against players online from around the world.

But from over 30 years of mixing and matching the iconic blocks, there are plenty of great games throughout the puzzle franchise to choose from. And it looks as those fans and critics have shared their thoughts on Metacritic for their favorite Tetris title.

Tetris Party Deluxe - 76

After Tetris Party was released on the Wii's virtual store, developer Hudson Soft made a retail version named Tetris Party Deluxe and as well as being available for the Wii, the DS received a port and was favourably reviewed in comparison.

With the touch screen allowing players to store and use magical items during multiplayer, voice chat via online mode, and being able to take the Tetris experience on the go, it was one of the best versions of the game on the Nintendo systems at the time. And being one of the few games to feature online functionality on the console, fans could play for hours with their friends without being in the same room.

Surprisingly,EA were responsible for creating one of the best versions of Tetris for tablets. It not also featured remixed musical tracks to solve puzzles with, but had an Endless Marathon mode to unlock for those looking to soak hours into the game.

This combination of the old and new made it an unforgettable puzzle game experience on the iPad as it used its tech effectively to also bring in bright, HD visuals to accompany the great sound quality. This resulted in a fun and engaging package that could easily see time fly by at home or on the go.

Puyo Puyo Tetris 2 - 80

A crossover unlike any other, Puyo Puyo Tetris proved to be successful enough to warrant a sequel for both current and next-gen consoles in 2020. Featuring a new story mode, new characters to help turn the table on opponents, and new modes added in, it was certainly attempting to be bigger than its predecessor.

But in no other game can the gamer play as Sonic the Hedgehog battling it out against some chibi-looking anime kids.

Tetris (PS3 Version) - 80

As Sony's first foray into HD consoles and games, the PlayStation 3 featured some of the most gorgeous and visually-impressive titles at the time, especially when it came to its open world games. And with the console's introduction to the online store, it opened up its library to more games than ever before.

One of these exclusive digital games was Tetris and despite a lack of modes, it still proved to be a fun experience for many gamers and critics. And with the power of HD, the blocks and background themes looked better than ever as gamers played the game with friends or by themselves.

Tetris 99 - 83

One of the most unique Battle Royale games to come out in recent years after the success of PUBG and Fortnite, Tetris 99 quickly became one of the best available on the Nintendo Switch. With the Nintendo Switch Online Service, players could battle with people from around the world to see who would be crowned the winner.

And gamers still return to this game with unlockable event themes, multiple modes, and a smooth and fun online experience. It's also one of the best games available on the Nintendo Switch too, which should not be missed by owners of this console.

Puyo Puyo Tetris - 83

Developed by Sega, they blended the two iconic puzzle franchises into one package that offered one of the best and most bizarre crossover games in recent memory. Being able to compete with friends in a number of ways, players could choose multiple ways to play too, whether they're fans of Puyo Puyo or not.

This game also featured a number of different modes to play too, whether it's competing online or locally. But it also featured an in-depth story mode where new characters could be unlocked who could grant different power-ups to the player.

Tetris DS - 84

Regarded by many as one of the best Nintendo DS games of all time, Tetris DS saw fun and colorful themes based on Nintendo's iconic games. As it was also developed by Nintendo, they were able to make the most out of the console and its online features to create a fun multiplayer experience.

With the combination of bright visuals and a unique multiplayer experience for the system, it was one of the best puzzle games to be made for the console. And it is still regarded as one of the most visually unique and best handheld title in the franchise that everyone with a DS should try.

Tetris (PSP version) - 85

Another EA developed Tetris game, this time it was made for Sony's first handheld console, the PSP. A digital exclusive for the online store, gamers could take the game on the go on the same system that had some of the greatest games of that generation.

It may not have a multiplayer mode like the PS3 version, it still offered the fun puzzle game that fans have come to expect. It may not have featured any fun new modes to give fans a fresh experience either, but it was able to do well with what it had.

Tetris Party - 86

Nitendo Wii Console Remote

Easily one of the most unique and fun games available at the time, Tetris Party was released on the Wii as part of the range of WiiWare games. And as the title suggests, players must play together or against one another in a series of unique modes that turned the game's formula on its head.

One of the reasons for its high level of success was the use of the console's peripherals, from the Wii Remote to the Wii Balance Board. Being able to use them to tackle the falling blocks in chaotically fun ways was enough to make it one of the best games in the franchise that will hopefully make a comeback in the future.

Tetris Effect Connected - 94

While not a massive leap from Tetris Effect, this enhanced version of the game was enough to see it crowned on Metacritic as the best Tetris game to date. Developed for PC, XBox consoles, and the Nintendo Switch, it featured a new multiplayer and competitive mode that were eventually added to other consoles in the form of an update for those that owned the original game.

Now with more relaxing ways to play as well as levels that will test players, the game is the perfect package for any type of gamer out there. And with its striking visuals and sound quality, it took the series to new heights that will be tough for future installments to overcome.
