The horror genre is supposed to incite fear and dread in viewers but sometimes, it can be the other way round. More than often, low-budget horror sequels and remakes can yield funny results. On other occasions, all it takes is some bad acting and dialogue delivery to ruin a scary scene. And then at times, even cult classics can have their fair share of unintentional humor.

Whatever be the case, such scenes have generated their own fanbase. And if anything, they serve as a light-hearted break from the darkness of cinematic horror.

Tatum Attacks Ghostface - Scream

Ghostface gets attacked by a beer bottle in Scream

As the Scream franchise is a meta-satire on slasher movies, viewers can expect the main killer to be a bumbling fool at times. Despite devising meticulous plans, the Ghostface killers of Scream have had their fair share of tripping on the floor while chasing their victims. The long robe probably seems like a bad clothing choice in this context.

The funniest Ghostface encounter might be in the first movie itself when Tatum Riley opens a fridge door at him and then throws a barrage of beer bottles. As Ghostface is only human after all, he is bound to fall and writhe in pain a little. The result is pure comedic gold.

Elliot Needs A Second - The Happening

Mark Wahlberg looks fittingly confused as the madness that is The Happening unfolds around him.

One of the worst M Night Shyamalan horror movies, The Happening is largely considered to be a movie so bad that it's good. The thought of a natural disaster causing mass suicides does sound scary on paper. But the movie plays out with unintentionally humorous results.

A crucial scene includes high school teacher Elliot Moore discovering a mysterious toxin in the air that is controlling the minds of people. When his wife starts asking him questions about the toxin, Elliot frowns and says that he needs a second. Some more people join the conversation increasing Elliot's stress levels. Finally, he breaks down by saying "Why can't anybody give me a goddamn second?". Mark Wahlberg's hammy dialogue delivery and frozen expression of fear add to the humor.

Pennywise Laughing In The Library - It (1990)

Tim Curry as Pennywise in the IT miniseries

Tim Curry makes for a scary Pennywise the Clown in the 1990 adaptation of It. However, even horror movie clowns can have their funny days. The library scene in It bears testimony to this. When Richie Tozier returns to the Derry Library as an adult, he sees the antagonistic clown surrounded by blood-filled balloons.

Childish, playful music can be heard in the background as the balloons start exploding in people's faces. The clown and the balloons are supposed to be visible only to Richie and yet the extras can be seen flinching their eyes when the balloons burst. Curry's menacing laughter seems like the only saving grace. All in all, it is one of It's weaker scenes.

Arnold's Reaction - Trolls 2

Arnold screaming from the 1990 horror comedy movie Troll 2.

Despite its name, Troll 2 doesn't include any actual trolls. Rather, the antagonists are goblins who turn humans into plants and then gobble them up. With a plot so ludicrous, it is obvious that Troll 2 is funnier than it's scarier.

During one of the goblins' early attacks, the character Arnold witnesses the crime scene. "They're eating her", he shouts in surprise followed by the most dramatic iteration of the phrase "Oh my god". The scene has been permanently etched in the minds of bad horror movie fans and has added to Troll 2's cult status.

Boxing Jason - Friday The 13th Part VIII

Jason boxing his next victim in Jason Takes Manhattan.

In one of the campier Friday The 13th sequels, Jason Voorhees goes against a group of high-schoolers. When one of the young students Julius stands up against the masked killer, an unexpected boxing bout takes place. Julius gives his best shot, unleashing a volley of punches at Jason who stands unaffected.

While Julius' efforts are definitely worth appreciating, his punches eventually end up delivering comic relief. Jason easily overpowers him, and slices off his head. Then, Julius' prop head rolls down the roof and falls into a dumpster with precision. The whole sequence plays out in seconds, adding to the absurdity of it all.

The Bees - The Wicker Man

Nicolas Cage screaming as a basket of bees covers his head in The Wicker Man

The critically-panned remake of The Wicker Man redefined the concept of a "bee movie," thanks to that unforgettable ending. When police officer Edward Malus investigates a neo-pagan cult, matters turn messy leading to a painful punishment.

As he is tortured by live bees, he screams in agony "not the bees." The scene is supposed to be blood-curdling but has now become a meme in its own right. Fans of bad Nicolas Cage movies will rejoice as he unleashes the ultimate potential of his overacting.

"We Made You" - Maximum Overdrive

A woman shouting outside a diner in Maximum Overdrive

With multiple movie adaptations based on Stephen King novels, the author is undoubtedly a horror maestro. But one professional misstep was his intention to direct the "killer trucks" movie Maximum Overdrive.

While the movie is filled with one ludicrous moment after the other, it is this scene that takes the top spot. As living trucks surround a diner filled with innocent civilians, a waitress boldly steps out and proclaims "We Made You." The over-the-top physical mannerisms add to the humor and if it weren't enough, she shouts the same line over and over again. The trucks still don't stop their rampage although Stephen King stopped making movies after this failed debut.

Vilmer's Outburst - Texas Chainsaw Massacre The Next Generation

Vilmer holding a gun and smiling in Texas Chainsaw Massacre The Next Generation

One of Matthew McConaughey's early roles was as the villain Vilmer in Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Next Generation. As he and his accomplices hold a woman hostage, Vilmer gets plenty of scenes to deliver over-the-top dialogues and jump around manically.

The peak of Vilmer's hyperactivity comes out when he's held at gunpoint by the same hostage. Instead of being scared, he stuffs the gun barrel down his mouth and smacks his own head. Added with a couple of ape-like screams, the scene ends up being disturbingly funny.

Projectile Vomiting - The Exorcist

A girl puking in The Exorcist

The Exorcist is definitely a pathbreaker in the horror genre. Given the subsequent horror offerings that The Exorcist inspired, it is obvious that some of its practical scares might not have the same effect on modern viewers that it had back in the 1970s. So, when the possessed Regan MacNeil starts projectile vomiting at Father Damien Karras, some viewers might just chuckle at the scene as gross humor.

The priest's disgusted reaction adds to the realism as well as the humor of the scene. Years later, the projectile vomiting was parodied in Scary Movie 2 when the priest pukes back at the girl!

Garbage Day - Silent Night, Deadly Night 2

Ricky pointing a gun and smiling in Silent Night Deadly Night 2

Walking in the footsteps of his brother from. the prequel, Silent Night Deadly Night 2's villainous lead Robert Caldwell murders people while being dressed in a Santa suit. Before he dons the red costume, he gets a taste of killing by shooting down his neighbors.

As one of his neighbors is emptying the trash, Robert says "garbage day" with a jubilant look in his eyes. The unexpected line along with actor Eric Freeman's crazed expression is bound to make viewers chuckle. And then within seconds, the neighbor gets shot as is established by shoddily edited slo-mo cuts. The humor aside, it is definitely an extremely dramatic horror scene.
