Halloween is just around the corner and fans are looking through their gaming archives to discover a few spooky games to play. There are countless horror titles out there that will be perfect for All Hallow's Eve. But there is a range of mainstream releases that also boast unexpectedly scary moments.

While horror might not be the driving narrative of the piece, each of these titles includes extended levels, side quests or leading storylines that would be brilliant to save for Halloween. There are options for every age too, allowing the whole family to get in on the creepy action.

Batman: Arkham City (2011)

Batman Arkham City Ra's al Ghul before the Lazarus Pit

There has always been a spooky element to the Batman saga, and Rocksteady's Arkham trilogy itself hasn't shied away from those comic book elements. Arkham City is surely the most well-received of the trilogy though, with plenty of horror-influenced villains plaguing Batman's night.

The resurrection myth of Ra's Al Ghul, the madness of the Joker, and even the mysterious murders to solve as the Caped Crusader tracks down a serial killer; there are so many features of the title that actually forces the players into a far more creepy mindset.

Kingdom Hearts III (2019)

Kingdom Hearts 3 Oblivion

The Kingdom Hearts series is whimsical and fun, combining arcs from Final Fantasy and Disney, as Sqaure Enix crafts a truly unique narrative. Much like the Arkham trilogy, each of these instalments includes creepier scenes that turn the tide against Mickey and co.

The villains that come from Disney itself are always a welcome edition at Halloween, but the way these fantasy characters have been transformed to have a shadowy darkness plays into the Halloween season. Kingdom Hearts 3 in particular features numerous boss battles with enemies with scary names like 'the heartless' who wouldn't look out of place in a (kid-friendly) horror title.

Hollow Knight (2017)

Hollow Knight Silksong Hornet

Team Cherry has created the beloved 2D side-scroller, Hollow Knight, set within the underground kingdom of Hallownest. Although the title is a fun and whimsical adventure for families to embark on, there are plenty of spooky scenes from the locations themselves to the designs of the characters.

There are obvious fantasy influences on the piece, but the dark and gothic-influenced aesthetic makes this a brilliant title to play through on Halloween. While thematically and visually it might match the tone of the season, it isn't creepy in the same way as a horror release.

Red Dead Redemption 2 (2018)

Red Dead Redemption 2 is a classic western release on the face of it. It certainly wouldn't conventionally be considered to be a Halloween title, considering gun-slinging feels a bit more swashbuckling than harrowing. But the game hasn't shied away from the horror arcs that can sometimes play into the genre.

There are so many locations to explore in this open world from Rockstar Games, with numerous creepy areas to uncover. Never outright supernatural, there are cultish moments and side quests that are sure to leave the player shivering as they investigate ghostly abandoned areas and unpredictable NPCs.

Overcooked 2 (2018)

There are so many fun party games to dive into for Halloween, but Overcooked 2 is one of the few that somehow combines spooky components with restaurant gameplay. The tone of the game is a fast-paced and comedy-driven one, but the foes provide a surprise twist.

The player is battling against the zombie toast, who hunger for some proper food. A range of levels across the title utilizes these antagonists to the game's advantage, with the final level, in particular, feeling a little apocalyptic. There are Halloween-themed levels as well to access for those looking for them.

Minecraft (2011)

Minecraft is all about creating and playing with friends. It's a game that appeals to all ages and there certainly aren't any major horror moments in the title, which would put off younger fans. However, there are a few creepy moments that can make Halloween that much spookier.

The zombies and other antagonists of the game can be pretty offputting at times, as well as some of the darker and grimmer areas that are there to be explored. What's more, the player can actually build a construct in time for Halloween, taking advantage of the feel of the season.

Ghost Of Tsushima (2020)

Ghost of Tsushima from Sucker Punch Productions uses Japanese lore to paint its narrative. The idea of this ghostly samurai, who is shrouded in mystery, allows for the origins of this legend to take form throughout the story. However, Jin Sakai also encounters a number of supernatural elements on his travels.

Whether it's the magic of the enemy in the Iki Island DLC, or perhaps the mythical side-quests which pop up throughout the player's travels, there are numerous ghostly sequences to explore that are influenced by the spooky stories of Japan's ancient society.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt (2015)

The Witcher 3 has become so beloved for its genius side-quests, stunning world building, and of course, monstrous creatures to hunt. It's those supernatural and beastly inclusions that make this an ideally spooky title to play throughout Halloween, as players battle creepy beings of another world.

It wouldn't be an obvious choice, as fans will see this CD Projekt project as a traditional fantasy saga, akin to the major shows of the current day. But, witchcraft, spells and monsters that lurk in the shadows are what All Hallow's Eve is built on, with some of these beasts pulling from the same folklore that influences the holiday.

Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order (2019)

Prior to Jedi: Fallen Order, Nightsister Merrin was manipulated by a Dark Jedi who crash landed on Dathomir during the Clone Wars

Halloween doesn't actually exist in Star Wars but that isn't to say that EA's Jedi: Fallen Order wouldn't work on October 31st. The game itself is a galaxy-faring adventure that feels very much in line with the rest of the franchise. But there's a major focus on Dathomir.

The planet is one of horror, controlled by the Nightsisters and Nightbrothers, many of which have now been zombified. Pair this with a fallen Jedi who has become influenced by Sith cultish ideology, and playing through the levels on the fabled planet is a great way to spend Halloween.

Uncharted: Drake's Fortune (2007)

There is something disturbing about creeping through tombs, looking for long-lost treasure, uncovering mysteries, and dealing with the dead of a bygone era. However, the initial Uncharted game took a very unexpected twist thanks to Naughty Dog's great storytelling.

The game actually steps into supernatural sequences, with cursed treasure plaguing Nathan Drake's journey. It's a shocking cliffhanger to move through, but one that blends themes of horror and the action-adventure genre that fans have become so familiar with. Play this with the light off and there are sure to be some frights.
