While it's fun to watch a light-hearted comedy or a fun superhero adventure, sometimes there's nothing better than getting wrapped up in a good thriller. From the early classics by the likes of Alfred Hitchcock to the movies of modern thriller masters like David Fincher, these types of movies can be the most captivating.

As satisfying as it can be to return to the popular titles and old favorites, Netflix is filled with exciting thrillers that most viewers might not be aware of. These gems may have slipped under the radar, but they are still worth checking out for any fans of the thriller genre.

Small Crimes (2017)

Nikolaj Coster-Waldau perfected playing morally dubious characters with his role as Jaime Lannister on Game of Thrones and he brings these same qualities to the darkly comedic thriller, Small Crimes.

Coster-Waldau plays a man recently released from prison for a violent crime. While he initially seems ready to turn over a new leaf, he quickly spirals back into his old life of crime, which leads to trouble. It is an interesting and dark take on the usual redemption story as this man brings down everyone around him with his bad decisions.

Cargo (2017)

Martin Freeman in Cargo (2017)

While the zombie genre may be played-out for some people, Cargo offers a quieter yet still thrilling new approach to the well-worn story. Martin Freeman stars as a father traveling across Australia with his infant daughter following a zombie outbreak. When he gets bitten, he must find someone to take care of his child before he turns.

Instead of the endless carnage usually seen in this type of movie, this is an emotional and suspenseful journey. Freeman also steps away from his usual comedic roles to deliver a powerful dramatic performance.

Cop Car (2015)

Kevin Bacon stands in the forest with sunglasses in Cop Car

Jon Watts was recently announced to be helming the Fantastic Four movie for the MCU, but he first caught Marvel's attention with this small crime thriller. Cop Car follows two young boys who come across an abandoned cop car in the forest and take it for a joy ride, only to become the targets of a corrupt cop.

Watts is able to bring a lot of tension and fun sequences out of this simple, small-scale story. It feels like a darker version of an Amblin movie, with Kevin Bacon turning in a fun and scary performance as the villain.

Gerald's Game (2017)

Carla Gugino handcuffed to a bed in Gerald's Game

While Gerald's Game might not be based on Stephen King's most popular work, it proves that even his lesser-known titles can make for great movies. Directed by Mike Flanagan, this small yet terrifying movie stars Carla Gugino as a woman whose husband suddenly dies of a heart attack, leaving her handcuffed to the bedframe.

This might not sound like a lot of material for a feature-length movie, but Flanagan turns it into a gripping and surprisingly powerful thriller. It also features some very graphic gore that some audiences may want to avoid.

Shot Caller (2017)

Nikolaj Coster-Waldau returns for another underrated Netflix thriller and once again plays a protagonist who is far from heroic. Shot Caller follows a successful businessman who is sentenced to prison following a fatal car accident. While inside, he slowly gets brought into the world of prison gangs, which continues to haunt him when he is released.

The movie is a terrifying depiction of prison life and how it can change someone forever. Coster-Waldau does a great job showing this man's journey from caring family man to brutal criminal, while asking how much of it is what he's forced to do and how much is his own choice.

Hush (2016)

The killer watching the victim in Hush (2016)

Even before stepping into the world of Stephen King, Mike Flanagan made this very effective small-scale horror thriller. Hush follows a young deaf and mute woman who is staying in a secluded treat when a masked killer begins stalking her.

This is a great balance between a compelling hero and an unsettling villain. The cat-and-mouse game at the center of the movie holds up very well without getting tired and while avoiding the usual tired cliches of the genre.

I Don't Feel At Home In This World Anymore (2017)

Ruth and Tony sit in a car in I Don't Feel At Home in This World Anymore

I Don't Feel At Home In This World Anymore is a bizarre and violent thriller with a unique sense of humor at its core. It follows a lonely and disillusioned woman who begins to question humanity after a break-in at her home. While searching for answers, she stumbles into a violent world she didn't expect.

It is a great look at the cynicism of the modern world and a rare thriller that makes the suburbs look like a terrifying place to live.

Blue Ruin (2013)

Blue Ruin

Another thriller that achieves a lot with a twisted sense of humor is Blue Ruin. While there are plenty of great revenge movies out there, this movie imagines if such a plot was carried out by someone who had no idea what they were doing.

It is a messy, gruesome, and brutal revenge tale in the best way possible. There are some truly graphic moments that will have audiences covering their eyes while also laughing hysterically, and it's a very effective balance by writer-director Jeremy Saulnier.

Burning (2018)

2018 thriller

Bong Joon-Ho made many people sit up and take notice of the South Korean film industry, but Parasite was not the only brilliant thriller coming out of that country. Burning is a very slow-burn mystery thriller that is very hard to shake once you experience it.

The story follows a young man who reconnects with a childhood friend and becomes infatuated with her. After she introduced him to her new boyfriend, a mystery begins to unfold that the young man obsesses over. The movie takes its time revealing the mystery, but it is worth the wait.

Good Time (2017)

Connie stares through a wire grating in Good Time.

Before receiving endless acclaim for the amazing Adam Sandler movie, Uncut Gems, the Safdie Brothers delivered another edge-of-your-seat thriller with another unexpectedly great turn from its lead actor.

Robert Pattinson stars in Good Time as a young criminal who spends a frantic day attempting to make a big score, avoiding getting arrested and freeing his brother from custody. The wild energy of the movie will get viewers' hearts pumping, while Pattinson proves himself one of the most interesting actors working today.
