The well-received release of Stranger Things' fourth season has proven that Netflix can still thrive off of its original creations. However, apart from the now countless original series and films available for streaming, Netflix is also known for its keen eye when it comes to saving series.

Whether it be picking up a canceled show like Lucifer, offering to stream shows with no distribution, or using its platform to generate enough views to justify another season of Breaking Bad, Netflix has saved many series from either the depths of cancellation or the threat of no release.

Manifest - 7.1

Manifest NBC

Manifest features the intriguing concept of a time-bending airplane ride, Flight 828, whose passengers land only to find their lives - and timelines - unfathomably changed. The series thrived mainly on its ability to intertangle the experiences and tribulations of many diverse and complicated characters.

While the show was canceled by NBC after three seasons, the popularity garnered by the show once it hit Netflix persuaded the platform to renew it, and fans are currently eagerly awaiting the upcoming fourth season.

Designated Survivor - 7.5

Kiefer Sutherland and Kal Penn in Designated Survivor

Designated Survivor tells the story of a man who finds himself thrust into the role of president after an unfortunate event. And despite its promising premise plus a great leading performance from Kiefer Sutherland, the politics-focused thriller only lasted two seasons on its original network.

However, after ABC canceled the series, Netflix swooped in and renewed the show for its third season - before soon canceling it all over again, much to the dismay of dedicated viewers. However, at least the streamer gave Designated Survivor a second chance at life.

Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt - 7.6

Kelly shielding her friends in the bunker on Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt

Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt won over audiences with its fine balance of dark humor and optimistic, inspiring appreciation of the mundane moments often taken for granted in life. Fans of Ellie Kemper also appreciated the many ways Kimmy is just like The Office's Erin Hannon.

Originally, the series was meant to be released on NBC, but it was soon realized that the show would thrive better on another platform: Netflix. Four successful seasons proved this to be the absolute right move for the show.

You - 7.7

Penn Badgley and Victoria Pedretti in YOU Season 3

Based on the chilling novels by Caroline Kepnes, You is a psychological thriller series that follows Joe, a fixated lover with a haunting past and a tendency for serial killings. Part of the show's charm is its ability to make the audience both feel sad for Joe and also hate him.

While You aired on Lifetime for its first season, it was picked up by Netflix for its second season and renewed again by the platform for a third. Fans are currently awaiting the confirmed fourth season.

Lucifer - 8.1

Lucifer Featured

Lucifer follows the adventures of the literal devil, Lucifer Morningstar, as he assists a police department and navigates love and life on Earth. With its complex characters and suspenseful storylines, the show became a hit, and fans were consumed with the will-they-won't-they relationship between Lucifer and Chloe.

However, after three seasons Fox decided to cancel the series. Fortunately for fans, Netflix took on the project, renewing the show for another three seasons up until its season6 finale.

Longmire - 8.3

Robert Taylor as Walt Longmire in Longmire

Longmire takes the crime and murder-mystery genre and gives it a Western twist, producing an intriguing concept that was adored by fans for its character development, along with its subtle and distinct charm.

Despite this, A&E announced the show's cancellation after a mere three seasons. Longmire was a hit on streaming though, which led to Netflix coming to the rescue, doubling the show's length and renewing for another three seasons before its 2017 finale.

The Killing - 8.3

Stephen and Sarah walking in an alleyway in The Killing

An American remake of a Danish series, The Killing gets added to the list of canceled crime dramas taken under the wings of Netflix. With its somber tones and interweaving storylines, the series nailed all of the detectives-looking-for-answers-all-season tropes.

Although it first aired on AMC for three seasons, it was saved by Netflix after its initial cancellation, ending with its fourth season being released by the streaming giant.

Trailer Park Boys - 8.6

Trailer Park Boys The Movie Main Characters

Trailer Park Boys rocketed to fame with its mockumentary format detailing the adventures of the titular trailer park boys, Ricky, Bubbles, and Julian. The show paved the way for the franchise's success in later films, mini-series, and various specials.

It originally aired on Showcase for seven seasons before Netflix revived the series after many years. The show ran on Netflix for another four seasons, then releasing an animated spin-off on the same platform.

Arrested Development - 8.7

Arrested Development

Arrested Development tells the tale of the chaotic Bluth family as they struggle to reconcile their current life with their former posh lifestyle, with many hilarious antics ensuing. The show is noted to be one of the few 2000s sitcoms that have aged surprisingly well.

While the series has now gained a great fan following, it was originally canceled by Fox after three seasons. But its slow rise in popularity allowed Netflix to bring it back for another two seasons, albeit a decade after its pilot was initially released.

Breaking Bad - 9.5

Jesse and Walter in Breaking Bad

Detailing the life of an ailing high school teacher turned drug maker, Breaking Bad was praised for its gritty takes, major themes, pacing, and chemistry among the cast.

Although the streaming platform did not directly renew the series, according to Vox, Netflix's expert release of Breaking Bad's previous seasons just prior to its season 4 release on AMC did wonders for the show and its viewership, allowing it to be renewed for yet another season and even spawning a few spin-offs, including Netflix's own Breaking Bad movie, El Camino.
