Over the past 3 years, FX has delighted and entertained viewers with What We Do in the Shadows. The show follows vampires Nandor, Lazlo, Nadja, their bodyguard, Guillermo, and the energy vampire, Colin Robinson as they maneuver through the modern world with archaic and outmoded ways of thinking.

The show has received acclaim by critics and viewers alike and both are eagerly waiting for the fourth season to begin, hopefully sometime this year. In the meanwhile, there are numerous other tv shows to watch that can entertain viewers based on their interest in What We Do in the Shadows.

Our Flag Means Death

What We Do in the Shadows boasts a colorful and quirky batch of characters constantly finding themselves lost in an ever-changing world. Another show with such as cast is HBO’s newest comedy Our Flag Means Death, which follows a bumbling crew of pirates during the height of piracy.

Like in the original film, What We Do in the Shadows, in which he also wrote and produced, Taika Waititi stars in this show as the legendary pirate, Blackbeard. He, along with the likes of Rhys Darby and Leslie Jones, has already made Our Flag Means Death as vastly entertaining and hilarious as the seven seas.

Ghosts

The ghosts all running

Comedy and horror don’t always mix well, but the supernatural elements ad the characters' hilarious antics in What We Do in the Shadows shine as a great example of such a merger. BBC’s Ghosts, and the recent CBS adaptation, are further instances of a show that brings humorous energy to the paranormal.

The original British tv show began airing in 2019 and finds a young couple in a new home haunted by ghosts from across history. Ghosts assembles a large ensemble cast to humorously explore the idea of death and what we leave behind. Interested viewers can find the BBC version available on HBO Max and the CBS version on Hulu or Paramount+.

Reno 911!

The dark and irreverent humor that permeates throughout What We Do in the Shadows is so successful due in large part to the earnest and genuine nature in which the actors perform it. They are all fools who believe themselves to be geniuses, striking comedic gold similar to another show, Reno 911!.

The subject matter couldn’t be more dissimilar, yet there is much that can relate the vampire rulers of Staten Island to the Reno Sheriff’s Department. Both shows follow a mockumentary style format – though Reno 911!’s in-show camera crew has yet to be killed by a vampire -  and they each consistently put their casts in overly complicated situations allowing them to maneuver out of them in inane and hilarious ways.

The Righteous Gemstones

Fans of What We Do in the Shadows will recognize the show for its absurdity and frivolity, traits shared by another HBO comedy, The Righteous Gemstones. While What We Do in the Shadows showcases the light sides of the dark, The Righteous Gemstones explores some of the dark elements that stay hidden in what is considered the light.

The hit comedy on HBO was created by Danny McBride and stars John Goodman, Edi Patterson, and Adam DeVine as well. It follows an equally dysfunctional family of rich televangelists with quirks and habits similar to that of Nandor, Lazlo, Nadja, Guillermo, and Colin Robinson.

Mythic Quest

One of the more hilarious elements of What We Do in the Shadows is watching these ancient figures learn how to operate in the modern world. Conversely, one tv show that embraces the trappings of today with an equivalently comedic flair is Mythic Quest.

This show stars Rob McElhenney – of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia fame, which is another good recommendation – Charlotte Nicdao, Dani Pudi, and F. Murray Abraham to name a few. It is available on Apple TV and it has already been renewed for both a third and fourth season.

Toast of...

Matt Berry plays the eternally charismatic and promiscuous Lazlo Cravensworth in What We Do in the Shadows, but he is likely remembered by many viewers for his numerous other hilarious and enigmatic roles. He joined Phoebe Waller-Bridge and Alan Tudyk in a special club of comedic actors by voicing a droid in a Star Wars story, specifically The Book of Boba Fett.

Berry also starred in the British sitcom Toast of… as Steven Toast, an equally eccentric character as Lazlo. Initially titled Toast of London, the show recently returned for a new season set in America and was thus stylized as Toast of Tinseltown. All four seasons are available to stream on Netflix.

Miracle Workers

Both the movie and tv show are remarkably unique when it comes to vampire stories – which is delightfully surprising given how important they have been to entertainment history from Dracula to the Twilight saga to Buffy the Vampire Slayer. This classic topic’s comic interpretation in What We Do in the Shadows is what makes it so refreshing and entertaining.

Another show that exemplifies this process is TBS’s Miracle Workers, starring Daniel Radcliffe, Geraldine Viswanathan, and Steve Buscemi. Starting with Heaven, then the Dark Ages, and onto the Oregon Trail, the anthology series has amusingly reinterpreted important historical moments and cultural topics.

Disenchantment

A remarkable hallmark of What We Do in the Shadows is the impressive effects, both practical and computer-generated. The fantastical story would lend itself naturally well to animation, yet the production and design teams more than succeed in making this show eerily realistic. Nevertheless, if this show were to have been animated, it would be just as successful.

Netflix’s Disenchantment – in which Matt Berry also appears – is a good option for viewers wishing to get a similar atmosphere, but in a different format. This series, which was created by Matt Groening of The Simpsons and Futurama fame, recently returned for a fourth part, and it excels at showing fairytales in a new, more mature light.

Avenue 5

It is difficult to say who the funniest character or cast member of What We Do in the Shadows is, but Harvey Guillén as Guillermo de la Cruz is certainly worthy of that title. In contrast to the vampires he is sworn to serve and protect, he is often the voice of reason. It is a common trope in stories – the employee is often more competent than the boss – that is echoed in yet-another HBO show, Avenue 5.

The comedy stars Hugh Laurie and Josh Gad, along with many other funny performers, and was created by Veep creator, Armando Iannuci. The space-trotting series boasts similar dynamics and humor to What We Do in the Shadows and has been renewed for a second season.

The Good Place

What We Do in the Shadows is exceptionally special because of the main characters’ performances are so strong, they could have their own individual series, and they would all be just as entertaining. This is a trait not found in many shows as their casts rely on each other to make a strong story.

Yet What We Do in the Shadows is not alone – another show that with uniquely robust characters is NBC’s The Good Place. With Eleanor, Michael, Chidi, Tahani, Jason, and Janet, The Good Place proves that if the right team is united, the results are extraordinary. Over its four seasons, it was nominated for numerous accolades, including the Emmy Award for Outstanding Comedy Series.
