Netflix provides millions of users with access to high-quality television shows and movies every day. That said, Netflix doesn’t provide the same service to everyone. Due to differing copyright laws and demographics, Netflix shows different titles in different countries.
While the United States gets some of the best and most popular titles available, US viewers don’t have access to everything. In fact, there are a number of TV shows that will never see the light of day on the US version of Netflix. So, let's take a look at the 10 best titles that Netflix US will likely never get any time soon.
10 Star Trek: Discovery
Star Trek: Discovery is one of the latest additions to the Star Trek universe. The show follows the crew of the USS Discovery on a series of missions that take place about a decade prior to Captain Kirk’s “5-year voyage.” While the show has gotten rave reviews from critics and fans alike, Americans will have to look elsewhere to enjoy it.
A large number of Netflix subscribers outside the US can watch the show anytime. In fact, Netflix bought the rights for Star Trek: Discovery in over 180 countries, but the United States wasn’t one of them. However, Americans can still watch the show if they pay for CBS All Access.
Hannibal provides more backstory for the infamous villain from the Silence of the Lambs, Hannibal Lecter. Mads Mikkelsen plays the titular killer, and the show spares no expense with the blood and guts. Unfortunately, Americans may not be able to enjoy the show in all its bloody glory.
Though Hannibal is currently available on Netflix UK, Mexico, and Japan, it will likely never get to US viewers. This is especially strange, given that Hannibal originally aired on network television in the United States. In any case, American viewers will have to wait until the show reairs on cable.
8 The Thick of It
Before HBO brought us VEEP, BBC Four had The Thick of It. This British comedy follows several politicians as they attempt to deal with PR nightmares and bureaucracy. The Thick of It was so popular that it even spawned a spinoff movie called In the Loop.
However, like many British TV shows, The Thick of It is hard to find on US-based streaming platforms. Needless to say, Netflix is no exception. Fans may need to travel abroad just to catch this one.
7 Peep Show
Peep Show is easily one of the funniest British television shows of the 2000s. The show almost exclusively uses POV shots from the perspective of the two protagonists, Mark and Jeremy. These roommates attempt to navigate socially awkward situations while trying not to drive each other completely insane.
Peep Show was available on Netflix US for a brief time, but it has since been removed and has little chance of returning. This is partly due to the fact that rival streaming service, Hulu, bought the rights to the show, and currently has all 9 seasons available to stream. So, while Netflix US subscribers are out of luck, there are other options for American Peep Show fans.
Atlanta is Donald Glover's latest television endeavor, coincides with his successful career as a rapper. The show has him trying to manage his friend’s burgeoning rap career in Atlanta’s ruthless music industry. Atlanta’s plot meanders without any clear direction, but it is very popular due to the funny and often poignant relationships between the central characters.
Having first aired on FX, Atlanta has now been renewed for a fourth season. Despite its popularity, the show is not available on Netflix US. Oddly enough, Netflix subscribers in Japan, Mexico, and Brazil can still watch the show.
Edha is a Netflix Original, though it was produced specifically for Argentina. This steamy drama follows a fashion designer as she attempts to keep her business and love life running smoothly in Buenos Aires. Juana Viale, actress and granddaughter of famed Argentine television presenter, Mirtha Legrand, stars as the titular character.
While there are many Spanish-language dramas available on Netflix US, Edha is not one of the them. The show is distinctly Argentinian and is therefore reserved for South American audiences. Sadly, American viewers will have a hard time tracking this one down anywhere.
4 Jack Irish
Jack Irish is an Australian action/drama series starring Guy Pierce. The story follows a private detective and debt collector as he tracks down suspects around Melbourne. Much of the plot is adapted from a series of mystery novels by Peter Temple.
The show currently has two seasons available to watch, but not on Netflix US. While Netflix US does have some Australian series available to stream, it is unlikely that Jack Irish will ever be one of them. That said, Jack Irish is available to rent or stream through various other platforms.
3 Kat & Alfie: Redwater
Kat & Alfie: Redwater is a British-Irish soap opera set in the small, fictional Irish village of Redwater. It follows the residents of the village as they attempt to unravel dark secrets lurking just beneath the surface. Some of the stories are also interconnected with EastEnders, another popular soap opera in England.
Unfortunately, this six-part series is not available on Netflix US. EastEnders is also unavailable to stream for American viewers. However, there are plenty of British dramas (like The Crown) to keep American audiences entertained.
2 Doctor Who
Doctor Who is one of the longest-running series of all-time. It is also one of the most popular. Fans around the world have been enjoying the exploits of the time-traveling British doctor for decades.
While Doctor Who used to be available on Netflix US, it was taken off the streaming platform. However, it is still available to UK viewers. It is unclear why the show was taken away in the US, but it is very unlikely to return in the future.
Blackadder is a unique British comedy that follows four members of the fictional Blackadder family throughout the centuries (all played by Rowan Atkinson of Mr. Bean fame). The show is notable for its dry humor and wit. While Blackadder has been extremely popular in the UK for years, it didn’t catch on in the US until it was added to Netflix.
However, Blackadder did not stay on Netflix for long. Following a few months of availability, the show was taken down. Now, fans will have to find another way to enjoy the Blackadder family (hint: Amazon Prime Video).
