Survivor kicked off the reality TV boom when it made a huge splash on CBS in the summer of 2000, and it's still going strong today after crossing the 40-season milestone. Even after two decades on the air, Survivor continues raising the stakes season after season, which means it's more exciting, dynamic, and dramatic than ever. But it also means it's more challenging to track what happens in each episode.

Thankfully, a whole crop of official and unofficial Survivor recap shows have sprung up on YouTube in recent years. Fans love these shows for their play-by-play breakdowns of every castaway's moves and "postgame" analysis that clears up both the text and subtext of all the Survivor drama.

Survivor Live

For three seasons, fan-favorite Survivor castaway Parvati Shallow hosted Survivor Live, CBS' official Survivor postgame recap interview show. Known for her gameplay steeped in charisma and charm, Shallow was a natural choice to host a show like this. In each episode, Shallow interviewed that week's voted-out castaway in a live interview that streamed immediately after the Survivor broadcast.

Sadly, CBS stopped producing Survivor Live years ago, and most episodes are hard to find now. But the official Survivor on CBS YouTube page still has every episode of Survivor Live from Survivor: Cagayan, which remains an excellent entry point for Survivor newbies. In the years since, plenty of other Survivor recap content has filled the void Survivor Live left behind, but longtime Survivor fans still remember this show fondly.

Richard Hatch's Survivor Recaps

Even those who stopped watching the show after its groundbreaking debut season remember Survivor's controversial first winner, Richard Hatch. In 2020, fans were surprised that the show's 40th season, which for the first time featured a cast made up entirely of winners of past Survivor seasons, didn't include Hatch.

Instead, Hatch launched his own YouTube channel when season 40 premiered, covering all things Survivor and more. Love him or hate him, the original Survivor always has a unique take on the show (and on everything else). Hatch posted recaps for every episode from season 40, but it remains to be seen if he'll continue his Survivor coverage in the future. Fans are keeping their fingers crossed.

Survivor Update

Taran Armstrong is a likable podcaster whom reality TV fans know for his contributions to the Rob Has a Podcast network of recap podcasts and streaming shows. For recent seasons of Survivor, Armstrong has hosted Survivor Update live recaps on YouTube.

He's joined for each episode by a different actor or reality star to discuss the latest Survivor broadcast, setting his series apart from others. Even though the RHAP suite of shows is already packed with Survivor content, Armstrong's winning personality has made him a fan favorite.

The Russell Hantz Show

Russell Hantz is one of the most loved and most hated castaways in Survivor history. Even though his days as Survivor's greatest villain are behind him after appearing in three seasons, Hantz still always has something to say about the show and its players.

Launching his own YouTube channel in 2018, Hantz covers more than just Survivor content. But he recaps every episode when a new season airs, and he frequently hosts fellow former castaways as guests. For those Survivor fans who can still stand to look at him, The Russell Hantz Show delivers plenty of spicy Survivor takes.

The Specialists

The hosts of YouTube's The Specialists, Alexa Pappas and Phil Wood, describe their show as "two friends, so obsessed with Survivor, we feel it's necessary to talk about it all the time." As one of the more well-established Survivor recap shows, The Specialists boasts recaps dating back to Survivor: San Juan Del Sur in 2014.

These days, The Specialists doesn't limit its content only to Survivor recaps, but also creates plenty of other Survivor and non-Survivor content during the off-seasons.

Why ___ Lost

David Bloomberg launched the website Reality News Online way back during the earliest seasons of Survivor. It was there that he first laid out his rules for how to win Survivor. (Rule No. 1: Scheme and plot.) These days, Bloomberg applies his rules to his Survivor recap YouTube show Why ___ Lost, where the "blank" stands for whichever castaway the tribe voted out that week.

In each episode, available on Rob Has a Podcast's channel, Bloomberg and co-host Jessica Lewis of Survivor: Millennials vs. Gen X analyze the ousted castaway's game through the lens of Bloomberg's rules. Bloomberg and Lewis zero in on which rules the voted-out player failed to follow, thus explaining why they lost.

Idoled Out

Idoled Out, named for the painful phenomenon of being eliminated from Survivor only because another castaway blocked their own vote-out with a hidden immunity idol, launched in 2020 with the premiere of Survivor's 40th season.

Despite being new to the Survivor YouTube scene, the show quickly earned popularity with fans for its insightful and entertaining commentary videos. Idoled Out produced great Survivor content during the off-season, but fans are eager for it to return to its Survivor Takeaways episode recap videos when Survivor returns with a new season.

Survivor Ponderosa

Halfway through each season of Survivor, the competing tribes merge into one tribe, and the players compete as individuals. At that point, voted-out castaways become part of the jury, observing each subsequent tribal council from the sidelines. Since they're still part of the show, these eliminated castaways stay in a nearby location called Ponderosa.

This is the basis of the Survivor Ponderosa videos, available to view on the Survivor on CBS YouTube page, which follow each castaway immediately after their vote-out. Viewers watch each eliminated player arrive at Ponderosa, where they get to see how they look after weeks on the island, scarf down their first real meal, and glow up after a shower and a shave. This footage is intercut with interview segments in which the castaway reflects on their time in the game. It's always a compelling post-episode treat.

Peridiam

Peridiam debuted on YouTube in the fall of 2017 with a video entitled "Top 5 Flashiest Moves Made By Survivor Winners." The channel has exploded in popularity in the years since, with fans frequently naming it the best Survivor YouTube channel.

Perdiam doesn't produce episode-by-episode Survivor recaps when a new season airs, but it does post loads of insightful Survivor content year-round, and it shows no sign of slowing down any time soon.

Survivor Know-It-Alls

Former Survivor castaway Rob Cesternino launched Rob Has A Podcast to cover the show's 20th season in 2010. Since then, RHAP has exploded into an entire network of podcasts and streaming shows featuring many hosts and covering reality TV, scripted TV, movies and more. But the crown jewel of the whole enterprise remains the Survivor recap show Survivor Know-It-Alls.

The show's hosts are Cesternino and Stephen Fischbach, both former Survivor contestants whom fans widely acknowledge as two of the smartest castaways ever to play Survivor — despite the fact that neither of them ever won. Cesternino and Fishbach stream their show live immediately following each new episode of Survivor. Given the hosts' years of friendship combined with their actual experience as Survivor players, no other recap show matches Know-It-Alls for humor, nerdy analysis, and fun.
