The superhero genre is a big part of various fandoms scattered across media. And with their ownership of Marvel and all its properties, Disney definitely has its fair share of heroes, villains, and antiheroes. But if Disney's known for one thing, it's animation, and you'll find heroes aplenty under that umbrella.
Disney+, of course, is the best place for you to get your superhero fix if you live for the world of the MCU, but it also has more than enough animated adventures to go around. Not only Marvel, but some original characters hit listing as well. Have a look at some of our recommendations for when you need to scratch that super itch.
Spider-Man and his Amazing Friends
This retro throwback of a show might not be as deep or as thrilling as some of Spidey's other outings, but its goofy, over the top campiness paired with its funny-papers-inspired visuals earns it a spot on our list. Accompanied by his roommates, Iceman and Firestar, Spider-Man and his buddies protect the city of New York from the forces of evil.
The titular trio often put up against famous villains like the Green Goblin, the Juggernaut, and Magneto, but they also receive a helping hand from the likes of Captain America, Hulk, and even the X-Men. Definitely a good source of fanservice.
Kim Possible
Hey, we never said they would be all Marvel characters, did we? Kim Possible might lack radioactive spider-powers, a high-tech robot suit, or a vibranium shield, but if you look closer, she has all the hallmarks of a classic comic book character.
Think about it, she has a comedic sidekick, saves the world on a weekly basis, and has a colorful gallery of supervillains. Not only that, but she also has to balance out her everyday life with the life of a daring crime fighter. We're surprised Nick Fury hasn't approached her with the Avengers Initiative.
X-Men Evolution
It might not be the most popular X-Men cartoon on our list, but it's definitely one you shouldn't miss out on. X-Men: Evolution was a different breed of mutation back when it first premiered. It took more from the movies than from the comic books, but that's not necessarily a bad thing.
Essentially, Wolverine, Cyclops, Storm, and the rest were given a more modern treatment. Not to mention it also featured underrated characters such as Nightcrawler and Angel on the team. For many fans, this is their first introduction to the X-Men and we have to admit that it's a pretty solid way to start.
Guardians of the Galaxy
Inspired heavily by the movies but with a touch of comic book fan service here and there, the Guardians of the Galaxy series definitely has a lot of good things going for it. Not only does it fill the void while we're waiting for Guardians Vol. 3, but it gives us a deep and thorough exploration of Marvel's sci-fi side.
In this series, you'll see the Guardians take on some familiar forces of evil like Tivan the Collector, Thanos, and an entire planet of Symbiotes, but you also see them fight alongside characters like Nova, The Avengers, and even Miles Morales. It's a must-watch for any fans of the team and one we highly recommend.
Darkwing Duck
He's the terror that flaps in the night, he is the rhinestone on the jumpsuit of justice, he is Darkwing Duck! And there's no way we aren't putting him on our list. Not only does this Disney Afternoon classic lampoon and parody the superhero genre, but it pays excellent tribute to the likes of Batman, the Justice Leauge, and more.
Darkwing is it true blue superhero, but sometimes he's so comically childish and over the top that we can't help but burst into guffaws of laughter. It's the perfect blend of heroic action and Saturday morning cartoon fun. What else can you expect from the likes of Disney?
Big Hero Six: The Series
Speaking of Disney superheroes, Big Hero Six: The Series is a criminally underrated gem that all fans of superheroes, Marvel, and Disney animation need to see. Picking up immediately where the film left off, the show deals with the further adventures of Hiro, Baymax, and the rest of the Gang.
Though the series has a few Marvel notes, there's definitely an element of Disney fun all throughout the show. From its colorful visuals to lovable characters, this show is a great way to get more Baymax. But we are still hoping for a sequel in the near future.
Rocket and Groot
These episodes might be short and they might have a long-running gag, but they're the best way to get more of our favorite trash panda and his lumbering arboreal other half. Rocket and Groot are easily fan-favorites from the Guardians of the Galaxy, and we're actually surprised they didn't get a solo series years ago.
The plot of the entire series can be summed up in one sentence. Rocket and Groot need a new ship, so they take up different bounty hunting jobs to fund it. What transpires are comedic adventures worthy of Rocket Raccoon's solo comics. If you've got five minutes to kill, you've definitely got time for an episode of this hilarious series.
Spider-Man (1994)
Although only some of the episodes are available on Disney+, they are from perhaps the best representation of the Spider-Man comics. Not only do the visuals of the show come straight from the comic panels, but the plotlines, villains, and drama do as well. It's definitely got our Spider-Sense tingling.
Granted, some of Peter Parker's internal dialogue might be a little fast for some to pick up, but this series feels like Spider-Man in his purest form. From the Symbiote Suit saga to his iconic feud with the Green Goblin, this series had everything a Spider-Man fan could possibly ask for.
X-Men
Speaking of perfect representations, the original X-Men animated series brought everything that made the '80s comics iconic to the small screen. Although some of the designs might be a little dated to those inexperienced in the lore, this show helped bring the X-Men to a larger audience.
All of your favorite X-Men are here, fighting against your favorite villains, and wearing their most iconic costumes (spandex and all). For legions of fans, this was the ultimate superhero experience for the longest time. Needless to say, we are thankful that a new generation of fans can view this with a click of a mouse.
Gargoyles
Our number one spot doesn't go to your standard superhero team, nor does it go to any one member Marvel's comic panels. But it goes to an alternative group of heroes with an eons-long career. We are, of course, talking about Disney's cult-phenomenon, Gargoyles. Stone by day, protectors by night, Goliath and his clan could give the Caped Crusader something to talk about.
Gargoyles showed the kind of drama, characters, and epic storytelling they could be capable of. The show was dark, but engaging, kept younger viewers entertained, but had more than enough to satisfy adults and older fans. Both mature and magical, it's a heroic series that demands to be seen.
