4. Keegan-Michael Key Makes Things Simple With Rocket Mortgage
Keegan-Michael Key (who, with Oscar-nominated director Jordan Peele, created the sketch comedy show Key & Peele) famously played Luthor, President Obama's Anger Translator. However, in the Rocket Mortgage, Key hilariously translates the complicated to the simple: the "pea protein gluten-free pate"? According to Key, "it's a burrito filled with vegetables pretending to be meat." The meaning of Big Sean's lyrics? "The rap singer took a loss, but now he's okay." Big Sean also makes an appearance to confirm Key's translation.
Of course, the idea is that Rocket Mortgage makes the complicated language of home ownership simple, but Keegan-Michael Key's side-eye ends up being the real star of the advertisement.
3. Jeff Goldblum Drives a Jeep Through Jurassic Park
Jeff Goldblum's Ian Malcolm did not appear in the Jurassic World: Fallen World's Super Bowl trailer, but fans still had an opportunity to watch Goldblum race away from an angry T-Rex thanks to Jeep's Super Bowl commercial. If we're being honest, the Jeep commercial - despite its lesser CGI - was better than the Jurassic World 2 trailer anyway. Goldblum's nervous idiosyncrasies and wide-eyed glances make his rollicking chase hilarious. The trailer ends to reveal that Goldblum is actually safe within a Jeep dealership, as the familiar Jurassic Park theme plays. Jeff Goldblum is a national treasure.
2. Peter Dinklage and Morgan Freeman Lip-Sync Battle Over Doritos and Mountain Dew
PepsiCo created a commercial to promote two of their products: Doritos Blaze and Mountain Dew Ice. In what seems to be a Game of Thrones reference to A Song of Fire and Ice, actors Peter Dinklage and Morgan Freeman engage in a lip sync battle. Dinklage, repping Doritos Blaze, eats a Dorito before lip syncing Busta Rhymes' verse from the Chris Brown song "Look at Me Now" - meanwhile, Busta Rhymes looks on from as a Harry-Potter-style moving portrait. Freeman takes a long sip from his Mountain Dew Ice before he launches into Missy Elliot's "Get Ur Freak On"; Missy Elliot, who is dressed up like Narnia's White Witch, cheers him on. The whole commercial is overly complicated and ridiculous - who came up with this? - but at the same time... getting to see Dinklage and Freeman lip sync Busta Rhymes and Missy Elliot is also pretty incredible.
1. David Harbour and Tide Hack the Super Bowl
Stranger Things' David Harbour starred in a series of advertisements for Tide detergent that made everyone forget about eating Tide pods. In the first commercial, Harbour appears in a series of cliché commercials for cars, beer, insurance, and other products - while explaining that they're all actually advertisements for Tide.
Harbour then appeared in subsequent ads that the viewer is made to believe is for something else. One commercial, which spoofs an Old Spice ad, even co-stars Old Spice spokesperson Isaiah Mustafa:
The beauty of these Tide ads, however, is that in their self-aware humor, they have managed to make viewers think that each ad is secretly a Tide ad. Because viewers are on the look out for David Harbour to stick his head in and reveal that the advertisement is for Tide, every ad actually becomes an advertisement for Tide. David Harbour and Tide definitely won the Super Bowl.
