The Amazon series Undone uses its unique blend of animation and compelling storytelling to explore a host of important thematic issues, including grief, family, and the nature of time itself. What’s more, it also features a very talented voice cast, all of whom bring a richness and depth to their characterizations. In particular, Rosa Salazar helps viewers to appreciate her character Alma and the challenges she faces as she discovers her ability to travel through time. This series takes a unique approach to his subject and, with a potent visual style, manages to bring the author’s peculiar vision to life. Though the series lacks something of a tonal consistency, it nevertheless should appeal to those who enjoy the way that Undone explores the different ways that people experience the world and their place in it.

One of the most appealing things about a series like Undone is that it continues to push the boundaries of what animation as a form of visual storytelling can accomplish. In this anthology drama, the story is presented through stop-motion animation. As with many of the other great shows to appear on Adult Swim, The Shivering Truth pushes the boundaries of storytelling, seeming to excavate the darkest recesses of the human unconscious in its absurdist visions. Though not always for the faint of heart, it still makes for compelling viewing.

Love, Death, & Robots (2019-present) - Streaming On Netflix

Love, Death, & Robots is arguably one of the best animated series on Netflix. As an anthology drama, each episode tells a different story, but each has a focus on one of the aspects of the title. Gritty and at times more than a little disturbing, the series shows just how expansive animation is and how much thematic territory it can explore. As a result, it is sure to appeal to fans of Undone and the way that it similarly uses animation to tell unique stories.

BoJack Horseman (2014-2020) - Streaming On Netflix

In part, the central story of Undone revolves around trauma and how its main characters contend with it (as well as loss). Though BoJack Horseman doesn’t always delve into trauma explicitly, it is nevertheless extraordinary for its willingness to use an animated comedy to explore some very weighty issues.

In particular, the series deserves praise for being willing to look frankly and honestly about what it’s like to struggle with depression. The series is a testament to how effective adult animated series can be at exploring the human condition.

Disenchantment (2018-Present) - Streaming On Netflix

In addition to trauma, one of the central premises of Undone is the main character Alma’s attempts to figure out what truly caused her father’s death. Parental difficulties are also one of the motivating narrative conceits behind the Netflix series Disenchantment, one of the best to emerge from the imagination of its creator, Matt Groening. In particular, the series’ main character, Princess Bean, has to deal with the fact that her mother is an evil sorceress and her father, though often well-meaning, is rather inept when it comes to ruling a kingdom.

Russian Doll (2019-Present) - Streaming On Netflix

Russian Doll is widely viewed as one of the best Netflix original series, in large part because of the strong central performance from Natasha Lyonne. In the series her character, Nadia Vulvokov who, in the first season, has to relive her death over and over again and, in the second, goes back in time to inhabit the body of her mother. The time travel component of the series means it will appeal to those who enjoyed that aspect of Undone, and its emphasis on family and intergenerational conflict also makes it a good fit.

WandaVision (2021) - Streaming On Disney+

In Undone, it’s the trauma of being in a car accident which gives the central character the ability to pass through time. Similarly, in WandaVision, one of the best series to have yet emerged from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it is the trauma of losing her beloved Vision which drives Wanda into madness. Using  her enormous powers, she manages to brainwash an entire town into becoming her own private sitcom. Beneath its seemingly absurd premise, however, the series ultimately becomes a profound and moving reflection on grief, loss, and love.

Roar (2022) - Streaming On Apple TV+

Part of what makes Undone such an appealing show is its ability to blend together the exceptional and the mundane. This skill is also very much in evidence in the Apple TV+ series Roar which, in each of its self-contained episodes, explores the experiences women must endure under patriarchy.

Though the stories are often grounded in realism, there is usually some element that pushes them into magical realism, whether it’s a woman eating photographs in order to re-experience her memories or a woman who becomes invisible.

Moon Knight (2022) - Streaming On Disney +

WandaVision isn’t the only MCU property to explore the nuances of trauma and grief. Indeed, the central character of Moon Knight, Marc Spector, has developed dissociative personality disorder precisely in order to cope with his mother’s hatred. As the series goes on, the viewer, and Marc himself, learns more about his inner life, not all of which makes for easy viewing. The series is a testament to the studio’s willingness to engage with tough material, and it thus makes a good companion piece to Undone.
