Premiering in 1992, Batman: The Animated Series, produced by Bruce Timm and Paul Dini, changed the face of Saturday mornings. This series wasn't based on the inefficient Caped Crusader from the Super Friends. This Batman was dark and moody. Perfect for a noir-like Gotham City with the same vibe.

Made for an older viewing audience, Batman: TAS has a similar feel to anime programs in the shonen genre. A mix of action, comedy, and an occasional tragedy, shonen programs are geared to viewers between 16-19 years of age. Most likely, current fans of Batman: TAS can enjoy some similarly-themed anime.

Demon Slayer

Demon Slayer has an underlying dark secret.

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba has a similar atmosphere of darkness as Batman: TAS. It also has a character with a related quest. Where Batman wants to rid Gotham of crime, Tanjiro Kamado wants to rid a demon curse. Through both series, it seems neither parties get any closer to a resolution.

Taking place in the 1920s, Demon Slayer focuses on the Tanjiro's goal to get rid of the supernatural demons that eat other humans and generally threaten mankind. He ends up entangled with a group called the Demon Slayer Corps. There, Tanjiro learns about certain breathing techniques that grant the entire corps superhuman strength and resistance.

Naruto: Shippuuden

Temari and Shikamaru enter a room together in Naruto Shippuden

The second part of the Naruto saga matches well with Bruce Wayne's journey from helpless orphan to skilled fighter and detective. Both the anime and Batman: TAS are stories of a native son that returns from extensive trials and successes to help their area recover. Naruto saves his village while Bruce works to rescue Gotham.

Naruto: Shippuuden takes place two years after the original series. The young man returns to his village after training with one of the greatest ninjas of his generation, Jiraiya. Unfortunately, Naruto can't rest on his laurels because an organization of criminal ninjas has come to destroy his home.

Bleach

Bazz B in Bleach using his Burner Finger

The concept of Batman: TAS, and of the Dark Knight in general, is there is light amid the darkness. Though the obstacles might be enormous, fighting through them to save one part of humanity allows cracks of brightness to shine in a black void. Though Bleach is based on an entirely different astral plane, its concept is quite similar to the former Saturday morning cartoon.

In the anime series, a young man named Ichigo Kurosaki gains the powers of the Soul Reaper, a personification of the Grim Reaper. Instead of taking anyone whose time has run out, Ichigo is tasked with defending these humans from evil spirits. Once he completes this task, the brighter spirits can ascend to the afterlife. Basically, Ichigo and Batman do their jobs to redeem themselves and others.

Soul Eater

Soul Eater Group

In the anime Soul Eater, Death City is not a nickname. It's the home of Death Weapon Meister Academy. The school trains human hybrids that can transform into deadly weapons that fight evil. For example, Soul Eater Evans transforms into a Demon Scythe under his meister, Maka.

Overall, Death City feels like Batman's Gotham. People end up being trained to become deadly weapons. Unfortunately, most of the time they're bad news. However, while they don't transform into physical implements of death, Batman, Robin, Nightwing, and Batgirl, among others, trained for years in the academy of Gotham's streets to help defeat evil.

Black Clover

Split image of Asta in Black Clover

Black Clover is a shonen about inner strength. Though others on this list have a similar theme, they have superhuman powers to back them up. One of the main protagonists on the show, Asta, doesn't. Though he does gain a five-leaf clover, the Black Clover, that provides extra abilities, it happens from sheer willpower instead of endowed abilities.

This is incredibly similar to the hero of Batman: TAS. Bruce can't run at the speed of light or change the course of mighty rivers. His abilities stem from an extraordinary inner strength that propels him. While he does have tools that provide extra abilities, they are simply window dressing for his willpower.

Dragon Ball Z

The cast of Dragon Ball Z

Goku's life is a series of challenges. It was the case in the original Dragon Ball and continues in Dragon Ball Z. Though he tries to live a quiet life with his wife and child, a new set of enemies come around to battle him. From that point on he can't catch a break.

Fans of Batman: TAS will enjoy the continual struggles of Goku and his allies because the Dark Knight constantly faces them. If it's not Joker then it's Penguin. If not Penguin then it's Two-Face. If not Two-Face, then it's some second-class stooge from another city that wants to conquer Gotham. Goku's battles seem like a vacation compared to what Batman goes through.

Blood Blockade Battlefront

Blood Blockade Battlefront features a city filled with rogues.

Though normal people live in the Gotham City of Batman: TAS, it always seems the rogues overpower that population. However, what if that was actually the case? What if a portal of evil opened up to let scores of strange antagonists walk the streets. This is the situation in Blood Blockade Battlefront.

This shonen anime takes place in Hellsalem's Lot, formerly known as New York City. The human population lives and tries to survive among supernatural monsters let in when a portal to the Beyond opened up. Now, it's up to the secret organization named Libra, along with a young boy named Leonardo Watch, to keep these beings in check. Luckily, Leonardo has the All-Seeing Eyes of a God to help the team.

JoJo's Bizzare Adventure

Main characters of Jojo's Bizarre Adventure Part 1, Phantom Blood

The Joestar family has had its share of adventures over the decades. In the fifth series of JoJo's Bizzare Adventure, attention turns toward the corrupt city of Naples. It's a metropolis where the police befriend criminals, drugs are rampant, and the mafia rules. Fans of Batman: TAS would probably say this sounds a lot like Gotham.

Their version of the Caped Crusader is a 15-year-old named Giorno Giovanna, who has a strange connection with the Joestars. He also has the power of the Stand, which allows him to reanimate plants and create animals. Though Giorno says to those in The Family that he's eager to join, his goal is to actually overthrow their secretive boss.

Yu Yu Hakusho

Yu Yu Hakusho actually has something in common with Batman: TAS besides a theme. It was released in 1992, the same year of the Fox Kids series. Additionally, both shows are about redemption after a life of tragedy.

14-year-old Yuusuke Urameshi is a delinquent by trade. However, when he sacrifices himself to save a young child from getting hit by a car, the spirit realm isn't prepared to take him ahead. Instead, they tell Yuusuke he can redeem himself through the completion of a series of tasks as a Spirit Detective. While not quite the story of a Dark Knight Detective, Yu Yu Hakusho has its share of scary moments.

Beastars

The characters of Beastars have a slim peace

Tales of anthropomorphic animals are one of the specialties of anime. Such is the case with Beastars, which has a similar theme to the Disney movie Zootopia. Instead of taking place in a metropolis, the setting is the drama department of a high school.

Yet, things aren't what they seem. Though there's a fragile truce between the carnivores and herbivores, one of the main characters, a grey wolf named Legoshi, senses an underlying level of violence simmering underneath the students. It's a similar form of evil that constantly pulses through the streets of Gotham.
