Since the 1970s and 1980s, slasher films have been a popular sub-genre that viewers can't get enough of. The likes of Sleepaway Camp and Friday the 13th have paved the way for directors to spin the story of a ravenous killer torturing innocent victims, and sometimes, getting away with it. Most of the time, a serial killer is a human, saving ghosts, vampires, and aliens to other horror sub-genres. This is what makes these types of movies so terrifying because it paints the picture of someone's next-door neighbor being a killer.

These days, just about any movie can be found on streaming platforms, and in particular, Amazon Prime Video has the goods when it comes to serial killer movies. The only problem is, there are so many movies that viewers might have a hard time finding the best ones.

House Of 1000 Corpses: 6.1 (2003)

Captain Spaulding leaning on a counter and smiling at the camera in House of 1,000 Corpses

Back in the day, Rob Zombie was best known for co-founding the heavy-metal band White Zombie, and today, Zombie is more known for revolutionizing horror filmmaking. His first installment, called House of 1000 Corpses, was introduced in 2003 and centered on a group of friends trying to find a bit of fun on Halloween.

Set in 1977, they set off on a cross-country road trip and stop along the road at "Captain Spaulding's Museum of Monsters and Madmen," which is a terrible mistake. Captain Spaulding (Sid Haig) has friends in low places, specifically a group of deranged serial killers. The rest of the movie is a pure-gore fest, but without a doubt, it's one of the best serial killer movies to come out of the early-2000s.

The Silencing: 6.2 (2020)

Game of Thrones's Nikolaj Coster-Waldau stars as a down-on-his-luck man named Rayburn, who lost his daughter five years prior. Rayburn is a reformed hunter that lives with his dog on a secluded wildlife sanctuary, where an exciting day consists of shooing off trespassing hunters.

He's able to catch the intruders by simply watching several TV screens that are hooked up to cameras in the woods. One day, when he sees a young girl in a nightdress running through the woods, his interest is piqued, and because of this moment, he's thrust into a mystery with a ruthless serial killer on the loose and a chance to uncover his daughter's disappearance.

Maniac: 6.5 (1980)

Frank Zito sitting on his bed in the dark with a female mannequin behind him in Maniac

For some, when Maniac comes up 2012's Maniac might come to mind, but for those classic-loving horror fans, the 1980 version of Maniac is where it's at. Frank Zito (Joel Spinell) adores his mother, but unfortunately, she was killed in an accident. She was never a good mother to Frank, but his dependency on her flips a switch in Zito's brain, causing him to kill young women and scalping them for his prized mannequins.

After a photographer named Anna D'Antoni (Caroline Munro) catches his attention at the park, he fixates on the woman and wonders if she's the perfect "catch." The movie is claustrophobic in a way that makes it more terrifying, and the special effects are excellent for the time.

Kalifornia: 6.7 (1993)

The characters of Kalifornia driving in a convertible

At the box office, Kalifornia bombed, but according to IMDb reviews, it hit a good nerve with viewers. Kalifornia stars Brad Pitt, Juliette Lewis, David Duchovny, and Michelle Forbes as a four-some who decides to share the road. Brian Kessler (Duchovny) is on a cross-country tour with his girlfriend Carrie (Forbes), exploring the kill sites of horrendous murders.

Early (Pitt) and his girlfriend Adele (Lewis) seems nice enough, but eventually, Early shows signs of instability. Is he the killer Brian and Carrie are looking for, or is he just a little off the wall? This psychological movie is a gem and one to see just for Brad Pitt.

Freeway: 6.8 (1996)

Reese Witherspoon is best known for her roles as Elle Woods in Legally Blonde and Cheryl in Wild, but before either of those movies came out, she stars as Vanessa Lutz in the crime drama Freeway. Co-starring alongside Kiefer Sutherland, Witherspoon plays Lutz, a 15-year-old girl who has just landed in a foster home.

After setting out to find her grandmother, Lutz's car breaks down, and she is left with hitching a ride from a man named Bob Wolverton (Sutherland). Along the way, she notices that his questions for her become intimate and uncomfortable, and as she sits in the passenger seat, she suspects he's The I-5 Killer. Freeway is disturbing, disgusting, horrifying, and is considered one of Witherspoon's best films. Even though Freeway is loosely based on the childhood tale of  "Little Red Riding Hood," it's much too terrifying for kids.

Beast: 6.8 (2017)

Moll (Jessie Buckley) is a troubled woman who lives in a small island community. When a stranger named Pascal Renouf (Johnny Flynn) comes to town, she immediately falls for him. Even after he's named a suspect in several local murders, she stands by his side, despite what her family says.

As Renouf reveals his true colors to Moll, she becomes doubtful that he's really who he says he is. Beast is an intriguing thriller that plays on the psychological side of things and has twists and turns along the way.

I See You: 6.8 (2019)

I See You is a 2019 horror drama starring Helen Hunt and Jon Tenney. They play Jackie and Greg Harper, a couple living in suburbia with a teenage son. The town is reeling from the disappearance of a young boy named Justin Whitter, who is abducted after riding a bike through the park.

As the case unfolds, strange events occur in town and at the Harper's home while they are going through marital problems of their own. A video reveals a strange figure walking around their house in a mask, which leads the couple to believe they are somehow a part of the town's mystery. Viewers won't want to miss I See You for the suspense and the shocking twist at the end.

Frailty: 7.2 (2002)

Papa Mieks standing in a barn with an axe in Frailty

Frailty might be nearing 20 years old, but it's a must-see crime thriller that has aged well. It stars Bill Paxton, who is also the director, Matthew McConaughey, and Powers Boothe, and centers on a disturbed father who convinces his young sons to aid him in murders. Once Fenton Meiks (McConaughey) is a grown adult, he walks into the local sheriff's office to declare their wrong-doings.

It's not that simple, though; as Sergeant Wesley Doyle (Boothe) listens to Fenton's confession, he's thrust into a case that involves demons, religion, and a murder twist that is as gruesome as they come.

Zodiac: 7.7 (2007)

If viewers are in the mood for a cat-and-mouse type movie, David Fincher's Zodiac, based on a real-life case, is the one to choose. Fincher brings together an A-list cast that includes Jake Gyllenhaal, Robert Downey Jr., Mark Ruffalo, and Brian Cox. They serve as the investigators and police force who are trying to solve the case.

Even though the movie was a dud at the box office, it's a thrilling story of the Zodiac's taunts towards the public and the mind-numbing puzzle to figure out who he or she is. Fincher's historically accurate portrayal of Zodiac will excite any history buff that's looking to get lost in a good movie.

I Saw The Devil: 7.8 (2010)

This movie isn't for the faint of heart. It's been praised for its goriness, haunting scenes, and unforgettable storyline.
