Netflix is always adding entertaining series and movies, and one of the genres that they go over and beyond in is sci-fi. From creepy shows that make us jump to serious ones that cause us to really think, there truly are so many great options on this streaming service.
So, for those who are looking for something new to binge-watch, look no further. Down below, we have the 10 best sci-fi shows that are on Netflix right now! And fans who enjoy science, technology, space exploration, time travel and fantasy better really get ready... This list is for us.
Colony was created by Carlton Cuse and Ryan J. Condal, and it stars Josh Holloway and Sarah Wayne Callies (which pleases many fans of the television series Lost, as Cuse was executive producer and as Holloway played Sawyer). This show actually premiered on USA Network's website in December 2015, and then it came on USA Network on January 14, 2016. Sadly, after the third season last year, the series was canceled, but it can still be enjoyed on Netflix, where viewers can watch a family struggle to stay together and safe after a mysterious alien invasion.
Supernatural has been on the air since 2005, featuring Jared Padalecki as Sam Winchester and Jensen Ackles as Dean Winchester. These brothers hunt supernatural beings, meaning that every episode is full of excitement. A fun fact is that this television series was only supposed to last three seasons, but now, it is the longest-running American live-action fantasy TV series. The fourteenth season is in full swing right now, so anyone who is behind better rush to Netflix, like, now! Plus, the two main stars are not too bad to look at... an added bonus.
Maniac is a miniseries that premiered on Netflix in 2018, and it is based on the Norwegian television series of the same name. Well-known celebrities such as Emma Stone, Jonah Hill, Justin Theroux, and Sally Field are featured and praised, as the show received nominations for Stone's performance and for the overall writing. And the premise of the show is centered around a pharmaceutical trial, which is where two strangers meet and feel a connection. It is definitely a unique story and another one we definitely recommend checking out, whether sci-fi is a favorite genre or not.
The OA is about a young woman named Prairie Johnson who had been missing for seven years. Upon her return, she refers to herself as "The OA", and she can see... even though she was blind before she disappeared. The show is a little out there, and it dropped on Netflix in 2016, just a few months after Stranger Things. So we understand if this one got overlooked or wasn’t a fan favorite, but go watch it or rewatch it now, because "Part II" is coming! What will happen next? What does it all mean? What is even happening? Hopefully, we will get some answers.
Okay, who here is into time travel? Well, this next show is all about that, and it stars Mr. Eric McCormack, which makes it even better. Yes, Travelers is a series that was an international co-production between Netflix and the Canadian specialty channel Showcase, but after its first two seasons, Netflix took over as its sole production company and distributor. It, too, has been around since 2016, with the third season being released in December 2018, and things are just getting crazier and crazier. It can be hard to keep up (with all that, well, time travel and such), but the interesting characters help keep fans hooked.
Lost in Space is a reimagining of the 1965 series of the same name, and that was a reimagining of the 1812 novel 'The Swiss Family Robinson'! This thrilling series follows a family of space colonists. Soon after it premiered in 2018, it was renewed for a second season, which is currently in development and will hopefully be on Netflix soon. And can we just talk about these characters? Will, Judy, and Penny are the cutest kids ever, we want a robot, and Parker Posey as June Harris is the best love-to-hate character around!
If we are talking science fiction, we have to give a shoutout to a classic - The Twilight Zone. Sadly, not many people were probably familiar with this series before it came to this streaming service. But thankfully, modern-day technology has made it where fans of all ages can enjoy iconic episodes featuring creatures on the wings of planes, tiny people, magical worlds in pools and plastic surgery gone wrong. Yes, before there was Black Mirror, there was The Twilight Zone, and we strongly encourage everyone to go watch an episode or five.
Speaking of Black Mirror... That is the next series on our list, of course! It is a British anthology television series that centers around technologies (usually dark technologies). After Black Mirror came to Netflix in December 2014, Netflix purchased the program, and the fifth series was announced in March 2018. Overall, this creepy and entertaining work has received many awards and nominations, like "San Junipero" and "USS Callister" - episodes that won a total of six Emmy Awards, including Outstanding Television Movie. Those who have not watched this series are behind...so go get busy right now!
The Haunting of Hill House is a supernatural horror show that was created and directed by Mike Flanagan for Netflix, as well as a re-imagining of the 1959 novel of the same name by Shirley Jackson. And this story is not for the faint of heart; it jumps around, from present day to the past, catching viewers up on a family’s paranormal experiences at Hill House. Apparently, this was a limited series (which was released on October 12, 2018), so we are not 100 percent sure if there will be a second season. Personally, we like the ending how it is and loved the entire thing.
Of course, we are including Stranger Things here, a Netflix show that we assume everyone has seen (at least all the sci-fi fans out there). Those who haven’t gotten around to watching it or who are looking for an excuse to watch it again - Here it is! It has the best characters, it has memories of the ‘80s, it has a true hero as the star, it has The Upside Down, it has menacing scientists, it has a great soundtrack, it has waffles...This is a must-see series, people, with more episodes dropping on July 4, 2019.
